The Toshiba Equium A110-233 is a very competent all-purpose computer, coming at a very reasonable price (I purchased mine online at Dixons for round about £460).

The actual model itself looks stylish enough, though it lacks any particularly imaginative design flair. Suffice to say, however, that it isn't an ugly, clunky beast like some laptops to be found on the market. The screen is perfectly serviceable, with adequate resolution to handle the viewing of multimedia, and doesn't fall into the recent trend of laptops of being irritatingly minute.

The processing capability of the hardware is certainly fit for purpose too - unless you plan on using memory-intensive games or image-editing software, it should satisfy your needs; certainly if you intend mostly to utilise Microsoft Office, the internet, and other software on an intermittent basis, you should find that your requirements are met with distinction.

As regards the battery time - I think the advertised 3.6 hours is probably a little on the optimistic side, and if you intend to be continuously using the computer while it is away from the socket, you probably will not manage to go beyond about two and a half hours. Having said that, that's probably more than sufficient.

Portability is fairly average for a laptop; the whole contraption weighs around 2.8kg all told, and is easily manoeuvrable enough; I manage to take it to lectures every day, and apart from the unavoidable annoyance that laptops provide in that they are just not ergonomic, the Equium is perfectly up to task here.

All told, I would certainly recommend this particular product, though it does depend rather on what you intend on using it for. If, like me, you are relatively unadventurous with your computer use most of the time, then it provides a cheap and capable solution, and in terms of value for money, is right up there. However, if you are considering using more memory-intensive applications, you might wish to look to a more specialist model. The Equium does not have the design flair of the Apples, the portability of some of the smaller models out today, or the processing speed of the Intel Centrino Duo types, but it is a very good all-purpose computer which has proven to be a paradigm of reliability, and above all, it's extremely easy to use.
