Following up the previous review from a fellow reviewer. You need to have read the review by bluerose28 to understand some of the statements in this review. I also have a Toshiba e740, bought for some of the reasons he included: The fast processor speed, the big high-quality screen, the expandability etc.
However, I must amend a few things he mentioned to reflect my own experience using the device. He says... "including the recorder's button, which is unwittingly pressed when the device happens to press against anything "
I say... This is correct I agree, it is annoying that the recording button will cause this behaviour, however it can be easily disabled using the software to rectify the problem. I never use the recording feature so it's not an issue. He says... "I noticed that the wireless lan switch was right next to the battery supply switch"
I say... Correct again, however
this switch is not meant to continuously switch the wireless LAN on and off and on and off all the time. If you're going to use the Pocket PC with WiFi switch it on, otherwise switch it off. If you switch it on, you can then enable and disable the wireless LAN using the icon at the top of the screen. He says... "extremely buggy, esp. with wireless lan and the charge indicator"
I say... Correct again, there are a number of bugs with the firmware that ships with the unit - as there are with lots of stuff which has on-chip software versions. "Firmware" incase you don't know, is software that is built into the memory of the device. In this case it is the Microsoft Pocket PC operating system. As with any device, it advisable to upgrade the Firmware if you have problems like this. When I did this, along with upgrading the BIOS, it fixed the problems I was having both with the WLAN and the battery life indicator. Toshiba admit there was a problem with the battery indicator showing 1% battery life when it was below 70% - not very useful! This is fixed as I mentioned when you update the Firmware and BIOS revisions. You can do this by following the clear instructions on Toshiba's website. After you've done this, like me, you'll notice a massive performance increase. He says... "I am now thinking of buying an extended battery"
I say... "Good point, probably worth it, I don't think the battery lasts as long as it's supposed to when the device is actually being used! Extended battery packs can also be bought which last much longer, they stick out a little from the casing, but the e740 will still slot into it's cradle with the extended battery installed. You can also charge it directly from the mains without using the cradle by the way :) He says... "My palm is superfast compared to this. "
I say... Yeah, it probably is, all Palms are probably relatively alot faster than Pocket PCs. This is purely because of the software, good old Microsoft have made the Pocket PC OS chew up resources from the system and really make the processor work. It's a bit like the Windows and Linux war performance wise. It doesn't help that Pocket PC keeps all the programs running in the background and unless you close them when you're finished with them from the running tab on the home page, they'll slow it down even more! He says... "managed to watch the Matrix Reloaded on it fairly well. " .... "it wasn't as fast as it was on my home PC. "
I say... Well let's face it, it's not going to be. He says... "It has a good clear screen, "
I say... It is a clear and bright screen and the stylus glides across it smoothly. I would however recommend getting a protector for it. I ordered a WriteShield specifically for this PDA from expansys.co.uk for around £18 - "What!?!?" you say.. "£18 for a screen protector?!?!" - oh yes, but it's VERY good - check it out! He says... "There is no keyboard with this device, "
I say... Indeed, but you can get an expansion pack (got mine off eBay for £7) and this has a USB connection for a keyboard if you want it, as well as a monitor connection. It will still go into the cradle with this expansion pack on, but it adds about an inch in length to the bottom of the unit.
ActiveSync comes with the PDA but make sure you've got the latest version. It's free to download from the Microsoft site. You can get the drivers for the cradle from the Toshiba website as well as the instruction book.
I think it's a great palmtop computer, and I bought mine for £240 a year ago on eBay from Hollywood in America, but at the time it was £480 in PC World. Since then, thankfully, it's come down in price! ;)
