The 12.1 inch wide screen switchable tranflective LED backlit LCD (meaning its very fancy) provides a sharp and very clear display both indoors and outdoors, even in reasonable levels of sunlight. With this advantage you will have no problems in enjoying your laptop in your garden or even in a small confined space.
The Core 2 Duo processor, with the 1 GB ram gives this laptop a reasonable specification, but looking at its high price it may make you think differently. The price is very high considering its specification and I would not recommend anyone to buy this laptop, unless they want one of the slimmest laptops out there.
If you are a hardcore gamer and want a slim laptop, then this is not the laptop for you. The reason it is not the laptop for you is because Toshiba have only provided a standard level graphics card within the R500 range of laptops. The included graphics card will not allow you to play the latest games. There are many websites out there which can provide you with bulkier laptops that are more cost effective. An example of a cost effective laptop provider is cyberpowersystem.co.uk.
However if you are the kind of person who does not require a laptop for gaming purposes, than the Portege R500 is the laptop for you. The size and weight of the laptop is an advantage for people who enjoy carrying their lap tops around with them wherever they go. The R500 is very good for work related tasks rather than for any other purpose. But I do not recommend it to anyone, purely because of its high price.
I have given this laptop 4 stars simply because its a breakthrough in technology and its very light/portable.
...the brightness have stopped functioning, i managed to fix it by contacting toshiba and downloading the relevant software, but it happened again so i contacted the company who provided it and they got me to do a system restore which worked for a short time, i have since given up. ...

Toshiba has packaged the machine well, with a handy set of utilities, such as HDD protection (although this can be annoying when you're on a bumpy train - even if it is doing its job), the ConfigFree software (with its quick connect to different networks, wireless and Bluetooth connectivity), and power saving options. Switching between monitors and Digital TVs (if they are fitted with a PC connection) shows that the graphics ... ...although the Realtek audio mixer is basic. The touchpad drove me to distraction until I found how to turn it off while I typed - it's software is too clever by half and leads to the cursor jumping around the screen as you type. The big thing you need to be aware of is, paradoxically, using the fingerprint reader software for anything than basic passwords. DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO USE IT TO PROTECT FILES. If there's a glitch that stops the TrueSuite software ...

Quick review of Toshiba Portege R500
had this for 9 months now. I absolutely LOVE it, it only weighs a kilo, so I just carry it everywhere. Runs Vista business just fine, and on powersaver setting I get just under 5 hours of use. Fingerprint login is useful and quick, but I recomend only using it for logging in, not to protect files. This machine makes Mac'ers look jealous in airport lounges, and will slip into your hand lugguage so nicely youll just want to show everyone ! super-light, but with all the bits you need on the run, highly recomended ...

The R500 is quite a light laptop, though it's not the lightest in the market. It includes a 12inch screen and DVD writer. It weights 1.1kg. It includes a 12in screen and DVD writer. The plastic chassis looks a little cheap in the flesh and the lid, which is just 5mm thick.
Low screen bright compared to the others and its viewing angles are not so comfortable. It is not comfortable to watch DVDs using this laptop as it is equipped with the tiny speakers ... ...processor, but its 1.2GHz clock speed and the 1GB of RAM is not suitable for intensive tasks. It's adequate for office software and some light photo editing.
Wireless and Bluetooth are built in, but the lack of a dial-up modem could be a problem in hotels without wireless network access. ...
