In my case I have a oldish Kenwood processor that drives the centre and rear speakers, then using a pre-out to drive into my main audio amplifier for the left and right channels.
Audio outs are provided though in the form of digital coaxial ... ...if you don't want to take the audio through the SCART lead to the TV.
Too much detail? The point I'm trying to make here is that there are more ways to wire up your entertainment centre than there are braces on spotty teenagers. So take some time to think about the boxes and wires you'll need. For instance, buy an SD220 and chances are they'll be no SCART lead in the box. Do you need to buy one or do you 'borrow' from the VCR? If ... more
OK, so you can pay 60 - 80 GBP for a DVD player, from the likes of Alba, Crown and other cheap and cheerful 'manufacturers'. Just go to your Supermarket, major electrical retailer or even Toys R Us (now what's the character for a reverse R?). But you would be throwing away your money. Before buying any non-commodity item (electrical especially) a little research pays dividends (especially at the Co-op).
Those same Supermarkets, along with more traditional Newsagents and bookshops, offer a number of What? consumer magazines. Then there's a raft of helpful 'comparison' web sites too.
The SD220E is a five star champion across the board. Like all entry DVD players, it is compact and bijou. It comes in black or silver and more recently in multi-region format.
So what do you get? Well firstly, a picture quality that is superb. Clear, well-defined, and sharp. Skip it forward at 5 times and the pictures remain complete with no missing blocks. This quality can be achieved through the SCART connection, though by using the RGB or Component Video outputs there is a noticeable improvement.
There is no 'surround sound' outputs (Pro Logic, 5.1, etc.) though as the Toshiba doesn't include a surround decoder. So, if you want surround sound you will need to either have a TV with that functionality or a separate processor for the job. In my case I have a oldish Kenwood processor that drives the centre and rear speakers, then using a pre-out to drive into my main audio amplifier for the left and right channels.
Audio outs are provided though in the form of digital coaxial or optical (at this price? crumbs) and analogue phono connections, if you don't want to take the audio through the SCART lead to the TV.
If you do buy leads, remember all leads are not the same and you get what you pay for. If you're keeping the VCR, does your TV have inputs for two video devices (VCR and DVD?)...plan it through. The Tosiba instructions do provide a selection of common wiring options (three) that may well meet your needs.
Moving to the front of the machine and there's a selection of tidy buttons to perform obvious functions. More likely, the remote will be your driving device and the 40+ buttons provide almost one touch everything. Logically layed out on a mid-grey housing, the remote is functionally good and as with most remotes, esthetically adequate.
As for price, again, research it. In the end I bought through Richer Sounds (Stores nationwide and Web site too), paying £115 for a multi-region, metallic silver machine, brand-new and boxed. Note that the store (135), the mag advert (What Hi-Fi, 119) and the Web site (115) prices varied by 20GBP. However, the store willingly matched the web price when I showed them a print of the page.
So, whether you buy this or another DVD player: 1. Research a machine that does what you want and does it better than the competition 2. Consider what other boxes and wires you will need 3. Shop around!
Alternatively, buy a cheap one on a whim.
But as the adage goes: The bitter taste of poor quality will remain long after the sweetness of a cheap price has gone.
...been very aware of the Toshiba SD220E after reading many glowing reviews of Toshiba's budget DVD range. This DVD player is part of an award winning range that came out a couple of years ago which including the SD210. Also on dooyoo.
BUYING THE PLAYER

The Silver fascia looks very smart and is one thing that makes the product look and seem a lot more expensive that it really is.
THE PICTURE

The picture quality of this player is quite brilliant for a player that originally cost £180. Many reviewers for HI-FI magazines ...

Advantages: Value for money,Nice looks, superb quality playback, wealth of sockets available Disadvantages: selling like hot cakes, needs chip to be made multi-region capable, no scart lead.
The Toshiba SD220E is my 3rd DVD player I have bought. Purchasing one is a veritable minefield of new acroynms to get your head around. My first 2 dvd players I bought because they were cheap, unfortunatly the players themselves were too.
The Toshiba SD220E on the other hand is one hell of a piece of kit for your money. I payed £134.99 including vat and delivery from www.dvdplayers.co.uk for a pre multi-region chipped model in silver.
The dvd player ... ...anyones tv rack. One thing that suprised me was the narrow width of the player. It comes with every socket on the back of the dvd player you could ask for. It does not however have analogue outs for 5.1 sound as the player does not contain a decoder. It does however have coaxial and optical outputs if one decides to connect a 5.1 reciever to it later. Astonishing for a player in this price range it also has component R,G and B video outputs for pristine ...

...DVD player or a five-star Toshiba 220 DVD player. I opted for the Toshiba. Despite the trouble I had of actually getting it (see my review on Unbeatable). I am very happy with my Tosh. The player is accompanied with an audio/video cable, a remote control (with batteries) and a neat, coherent user manual. The price then was £180, now it can be obtained for as low as £110. The Toshiba SD220E is CD-RW, CD-R and MP3 compatible. It is Dolby Digital and ... ...Playback options are also very good. You can play tracks in the order you want or you can just select random. There is a zoom function, which is pretty impressive. On selected DVDs a camera angle can be selected along with subtitles and choice of language. The on-screen menu is easy to operate and the user manual is concise and easy to understand. If you have any problems there is a comprehensive ‘troubleshooting’ table, which is very ...

Advantages: Cheap and very impressive Disadvantages: Remote a bit too fiddly
The things that most people look for in a good quality DVD player are the picture quality, the sound quailty, the appearance and also price. On all these 4 counts the SD220E comes out with very high marks.
The picture quality is great, very clear and belies the fact that it is considered a lower end DVD player due to the price (I paid £110 from Amazon.com). None of the problems I have encountered with other DVD players is evident (this being the ... ...area of the screen and make it look like a mini rainbow (never good for the mood effect required in a film!).
Sound wise too this player scores well. Surround sound adds a whole new dimension to a great movie and when it is as clear as this then all the better. Able to play audio CDs as well (although with slightly less clarity but if you wanted a CD player you would buy one eh? ) I have not tried the MP3 CD player yet however but would ...

It may not live with the high end DVD players around, but for a hundred pounds you get a player that is comparable with most mid range systems. I recommend it without hesitation. ...

Advantages: Great sound and picture Disadvantages: It is really heavy
freeview box the colours look vibrant and everything looks good and detailed, Watch a DVD and things improve even more. I have the award winning ToshibaSD220E that I have reviewed on dooyoo and this combination works a treat.
The sound makes the quality of the picture seem insignificant due to the way in which this TV deals with music, films and generally tv watching. After selling a pair of Acoustic Solution speakers on ebay I have been using this TV with my DVD player to play music and it does the job remarkably well with nearly everything you throw at it. The Bass performance is amazing and people new to this TV will swear that there are some extra speakers somewhere. There's also great detail here with voices having good detail even with music. You really have to have this TV loud before it starts to struggle.
