The Toshiba SD220E is my 3rd DVD player I have bought. Purchasing one is a veritable minefield of new acroynms to get your head around. My first 2 dvd players I bought because they were cheap, unfortunatly the players themselves were too.
The Toshiba SD220E on the other hand is one hell of a piece of kit for your money. I payed £134.99 including vat and delivery from www.dvdplayers.co.uk for a pre multi-region chipped model in silver.
The dvd player itself is a very sleek and stylish looking addition to anyones tv rack. One thing that suprised me was the narrow width of the player. It comes with every socket on the back of the dvd player you could ask for. It does not however have analogue outs for 5.1 sound as the player does not contain a decoder. It does however have coaxial and optical outputs if one decides to connect a 5.1 reciever to it later. Astonishing for a player in this price range it also has component R,G and B video outputs for pristine picture quality. It also features twin laser pickup technology which makes one hell of a difference.
Playback is where this dvd player shines the most, and lets face it that is where it counts! Using a Scart socket the picture quality oozes sharpness and crystal clarity I have never seen before. Unlike previous dvd players I have had the sd220e NEVER shows blocks during fast scene transitions. Infact the playback quality of dvd is so good you forget it is digital media. The On screen adjustment is also good, providing different contrast and brightness settings for dvd playback and sound adjustment too. Sound effects coming through my hitatchi widescreen tv are audibly impressive and my tv`s prologic decoding makes good with its fake surround sound.
The remote that comes with the player is small but functional with everything you could want a single button press away.
Finally the icing on the cake for the sd220e is what else it is capable of playing back. It can also play DVD-R, Video CD, SUPER VCD (upto 2400mb/s), mp3 and cd audio.
Its a superb bit of kit that would compliment anyones living room. WHAT-HI-FI magazine recently awarded it top of the budget dvd players in 2002, and I couldn't agree more.
Theres even the added incentive of 3 free dvd`s if you buy it now! something I missed out on when I purchased mine!
