What HiFi gave this player 5 star rating commenting that it believed Toshiba had shot itself in the foot by producing such a good player at such a cheap price, even comparing it £200 players.

The ability to scale up DVD's to 1080i works very well with the colours becoming richer and the definition becoming much more pinsharp - all in a player that costs so little. I understand why WhatHiFi raved about this player and still astonished as to how little it costs compared to the quality.

Plus it was compatible with VCD so i could watch my large collection of martial arts films. With its ability to read rewritable dvd's ... ...The controls are easy to navigate and instructions to setting up are simple to follow. Unfortunately, on a variety of disks, the player demonstrated ... ...would freeze for anything from a moment to five seconds or so, like a really bad layer change. Not a problem with the disks (several tried, all OK in other players) but the player itself.
Okay, so there's a problem with that particular player, so we return it. The replacement has the same fault but does it more frequently. And it's surprising how annoying those short freeze-ups can be.
Maybe I was very unlucky and got the only two bad examples, ...
