When my first PC failed i decided to replace it with a laptop in order to fit in with changes in my circumstances. After some breif research i chose this laptop, as it seemed to suit my needs and was good value for money. I've now had the laptop for nearly a year (11months).
Even though it is relatively low spec it is adequate for my needs and there's the option to add more memory or buy a bigger hard drive whe you order or as i did add memory myself. With all sorts of external harddrives and flash drives on the market nowadays you don't really need to worry about storage space.
It's comparatively light and if you purchase a good case is easy to carry around. The laptop is robust, so far i have not got any dead pixels and have carried it around quite a bit (obviously had to buy a case) without it getting damaged. There's only a minor bit of rubbing off of the silver bezelling, which will only affect its look if it gets worse. The hinge feels very sturdy even now, though the screen's surround is starting to creek a bit, again not a major problem.
When you purchase there's an option for internal wireless, but it is more expensive so i went for a third party PCMCIA wireless card, this will use the one and only PCMCIA slot. Of course, using wireless connection (assuming you have a wireless network) will make your laptop much more flexible and you can still plug into a wired network.
The sound quality from the speakers is fairly good, though once you've plugged in external speakers you won't want to go back to the internals. The quality of the speaker output is excellent with no audible interference.
There's a fan, for cooling purposes, which comes on when required (at various speeds), but it's fairly quiet. I often use it on my lap, sometimes this involves covering up the fan, which means after a while and depending on what you are doing it will get fairly hot even though the fan is on full. However, it's not as hot as other laptops i've used (belonging to other people) and soon cools down when you remove any obstructions.
The laptop has a touch pad for input, which can be used to scroll vertically and horizontally. If you've had limited use of laptops you may find yourself accidentally touching the pad, but you wil soon learn to avoid it. There's two buttons in front of the touch pad, which act as left and right mouse buttons.
There's no seperate number pad, but you will find one inset onto part of the letter and number(along the top) keys. This is activated using the 'Fn' button and pressing the relevant function key. I find this feature a bit annoying, if i can be bothered to use it i often forget to turn it off so end up typing numbers instead of letters. I generally stick to the numbers along the top, but depending how many numbers you are typing this can be a little annoying. Other keys (mainly the function keys) have extra features, such as allowing you to adjust the screen brightness (v easy to use and i know do it without thinking), putting your laptop on standby (i don't really use this, maybe i should). Like any keyboard you will have toget used to it's differences from any other you may already have.

I have owned a Toshiba Satelite Pro for over three years now and on the whole am very happy with the machine. There is however a caveat with my recommendation. The design boys at Toshiba made one glaring mistake by placing the cooling vent for the processor on the underside of the laptop. as a result the laptop will gets very hot, the fan is constantly working at near maximum and is noisy. Eventually, the machine will get too hot and close down. ... ...drive

I have owned a Toshiba A10 for over a year now and I am using it right now to write this review. I ordered it direct from Toshiba for around £650 and I received it the next day. I opened the packaging and like many computers the software was preinstalled. Meaning I only had to switch it on and I could start using my laptop right away.
It comes supplied with a external floppy drive which is worth £40 from PC-world, a modem cable, power cable, backup ... ...help me, I then rung Toshiba and after explaining the situation I was on my way to Maplins to get the right cable.
Since then I have upgraded to a wireless network. I used a card that slotted in the side but the laptop does have the capability to put a wireless card internally.
Overall I would say this is a very good, budget laptop that I would recommend to anyone. ...

This laptop is quite good at simple tasks, but really falls flat on its face when it comes to speed, and games. It uses accelerated graphics, which really slow down graphics performance.
This problem can be solved however! All you need to do is add a 512mb stick of RAM, it's that simple! A 512mb stick of RAM means less slowdown, and better performance, and you can install it yourself in 2 minutes flat!
Other than the speed problems, the A10 is ... ...a bit cheap. Also, the fingerpad is not so great, and I'd highly recommend buying a mouse.
The laptop looks sleek and professional, and although bulky, is very hardwearing. It's not silent, but it's not really loud either.
Overall, a good laptop from Toshiba, desperate for a RAM upgrade!

...i took my 'ultra portable' Toshiba satellite a10 pro out of it's packaging, to dicover just how big and bulky it really ia! (to say nothing of excess weight - it REALLY needs to go on a diet). As a desktop replacement (which is what i have ended up using mine as) it is a superb system, with all the power you could use, plus a lot more, however it dosen't really cut it as a business portable which is what it was designed as. The abundance of features ... ...loose fitting catch, so i returned it to Toshiba for a replacement. This happened 3 times, and after the third faliure TOSHIBA refused to exchange it again, leaving me with faulty goods. Never mind eh - i bought a notebook and ended up with a dodgy desktop, but never mind! ...

Advantages: Quality is reasonably good Disadvantages: major defect in many models
I own a toshiba laptop and I know several people who do too.
In general, toshiba laptops are among the best laptops out there. There is a big problem with them though. After about 5 months, the computer faces a total shut down for no reason, for example the computer will just die and you will have to turn it back on again. Similarly, there is a problem with the power supply in that the power supply goes randomly too. What you have to do is take ... ...to my toshiba, but no! Its happening to my friend's toshiba's too.... and the worrying thing is that they have different models, and newer models! so before you decide to buy a toshiba laptop make sure you get it insured, or buy another company, because this bug is extremely frustrating! ...

I had tried four USB / PCM/CIA cards WiFi and had difficulties. Putting cost considerations aside for once, I bought the Toshiba non-gen card and have not looked back other than to wish I had done this from the start.
As in the cioa review ToshibaSatelliteProA10Review5437768 I would very strongly recommend ensuring that you have the exactly correct screw-driver as the cover fixings are soft aluminium. Otherwise installation is a doddle.
The Atheros software is a dream to use: I use it at two locations on a regular basis and have also used it recently at three airports and a MacDonalds: ciao reviews FunchalAirportFNCReview5437665 (free WiFi!) & LisbonLISReview5437714 .
