This is my second Toshiba Satellite. Until recently I have been using a slightly dated but very effective Toshiba Satellite L10-114. Having recently purchased this new one though, I have to say there is a substantial improvement over my old lap top.
I run my own business from home and my lap top is my life line and main source of income so it always has to be Toshiba for me. They are so reliable and trustworthy that I will not risk any other make now.
The L40-12T is simply a stunning looking machine and creates an instant wow factor - key when using it in front of clients at presentations etc. It looks like a far more expensive machine than it really is. This is sadly quite key in such a material world.
The resolution of the screen is of the highest order in my opinion. For some reason - and there may be a technical reason for this - the screen does not attract dust or marks as much as the older model. Also, sunlight does not seem to reflect as badly. I am not a technical person as you can undoubtedly tell....I'm sure someone who is can shed some light on this aspect for you. Pardon the pun.
In terms of usability, well it's early days for me still but the first impressions are certainly good. Some say one laptop is very much like any other but there is something very user friendly about Toshiba's products that has helped me come back again and again. The back up and training info/manuals are very useful and any problems can usually be ironed very easily at home without needing to call the helpline.
The battery life and charging times are both excellent. I regularly run large powerpoint presentations from the lap top and they tend to run the battery down very quickly. No such problems with this one.
The machine is relatively quiet when running and is easy to get to grips with.
It's light to carry and although I sometimes find the lap top mouse sensor to be a bit TOO sensitive, I can not yet find any reason not to heartily recommend this product. If you require a bullet proof notebook that's easy to use, doesn't need constant recharging or shoulder muscles of steel to carry, this is the one for you.
I apologise that this is not a hugely technical review. In my experience, most people who use lap tops are like me....not technically minded. They just want a machine that works and works well without problems. I have therefore reviewed it this way - the only way I can.
I bought this laptop four months ago and have been impressed so far. It was very easy to set up and came with all the relevant software to get you started (including Vista). The most important thing for me was the processor speed and battery life - both of which are very good for the price. I can usually get about two hours of battery before it needs recharging (on Powersave mode). For day-to-day word processing, internet surfing and photoshopping, ... ...struggled playing streamed video, but you can usually get round this by reducing the quality of the playback. The keyboard is comfortable and the screen quality is very sharp. I would definitely recommend this as a reliable basic computer.
A few cons: It's quite heavy (compared to Sony's VAIO range) so maybe not the best laptop to carry around all day. The internal speakers don't go very loud (and are often get covered when I'm typing). As I use ...

Advantages: Ideal for Companies for Employees Disadvantages: No Software included
Toshiba, one of the best names in laptop computers about and if you are looking to pay a little less for your laptop but want a good machine then the new Satellite Pro L40 is ideal.
It hasn't got dual core but at the end of the day who really needs this. This laptop is and ideal buy for any company that gives laptops to their employees, or whether you want a machine to potter about at home on.
Extremely stylish and lite weight, this can be carried ... ...it for business purposes then don't worry you can still log on in your hotel room.
512MB RAM is quite enough for any user, in my job the files produce are of extreme size and there is no problem storing all this on this machine.
CD / DVD RW also included which is a bonus.
The only downfall is that this laptop comes with no software on it but like I said if you are using it for Company purposes then software shouldn't be a problem.

This laptop is one of the best buys out there on the market. It's available cheaply and is capable of running almost anything that any regular user would want. It's main setback is the lack of RAM, Random access memory that is used to store programs that are in use. But this is easily corrected by any mildly competent computer user, as RAM is available very cheaply and easy to install. So, for an extra £20 one can add a 1GB stick to this laptop and ... ...The graphics card is Vista capable and gives a 2.6 / 5 rating in Windows vista, which is enough to run the new Aero graphics system. Different models have different size hard disks, but even the smallest ones on offer provide more than enough storage space for the average user. Overall a highly recommended product. ...

Advantages: large memory, fast, easy to use, great value for money Disadvantages: none
I've recently purchased this laptop after my previous one broke and i'm very pleased with it. As a student, i needed a laptop that was simple to use to get my work done and this was it. Compared to my old laptop, this one is much faster, simple to use, typing is easier, the quality of the sound is excellent, its a relatively slim laptop and the impressive widescreen makes all the difference. I can find no fault with it. I also play games on this ...

Advantages: GREAT SLEEK DESIGN + REASONABLE PERFORMANCE + GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY Disadvantages: BATTERY LIFE COULD BE BETTER!!!!
GREAT LAPTOP, IN THE WAY IT LOOKS WITH IT'S SLEEK DESIGN, AND QUALITY FEEL, EASE OF USE AND PERFORMANCE. AS STANDARD MEMORY IT HAS 512 MB OF RAM WHICH CAN BE EXPANDED TO 1024 MB IF NEEDED. PERFORMANCE CAN BE A LITTLE SLOW AT TIMES, BUT THAT IS ONLY DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF PROGRAMS YOU USE AT THE SAME TIME. BATTERY LIFE IS REASONABLE, ONLY LASTING 3 HOURS MAXIMUM, BUT IT IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR PORTABILITY. THE CLOCK SPEED IS REASONABLE ENOUGH WITH 1.5 GHZ, ALSO THE HARD DISK IS A LIITLE SMALL AT 40GB BUT THERE ARE OTHER TOSHIBASATELLITEPROL10'S WITH LARGER HARD DISKS, BUT IS GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY. ALL IN ALL IT'S A GREAT LAPTOP, WITH ALOT TO OFFER!!!!!! ...
