Working in IT I get to test all the latest machines and I had the pleasure recently of using the Tecra 8100 1Ghz machine running with 256MB and I have to say I was very impressed. Firstly it is quite sleek and light which you want in a laptop and I think it looks very stylish. Now that the asthetics are out of the way we can concentrate on the important things like performance and stability. I have experience of many laptops e.g. Compaq Armadas, Dell Inspirons, Sony Vaios etc but so far the Toshiba Tecra has been th most reliable. The other brands I have mentioned seem to all have problems with the power management systems. Most use speedstep technology which means when the laptop is not plugged in the processor will clock down to save power. This is a pain on most of the other machines but not the Toshiba. Also the biggest problems with laptops is the cooling as you can't fit a big heatsink and fan like on desktops so the processors tend to heat up a lot, especially on the 1Ghz models. If the processor gets too hot the system will hang or worse, the laptop casing will start to melt. I had the Tecra over a month and being a systems engineer and a Quake3 fan I really hammered the processor and it didn't hang once. Also it was cheaper than most of the other brands which is great value for money considering the performance. The 14.1" TFT screen is a joy to stare at and is very clear but I would have prefered a 15" especially as it has a built in DVD drive. The final selling point has to be the built in wireless adapter. For those of you in the know it uses WiFi technology which means you can walk into a company that uses WiFi technology for their networks and without having to plug any cables in you can aceess the network. It's great at home as I have a desktop with a wireless access point that it connected to the internet runnnig windows2000. All I have to do is a share the connection and I could be sitting in the garden using my laptop to connect to the internet through the wireless adapter. Well I think you get the idea. If you're going to buy a laptop there is no better option.

A really well written op. This will be added to my shortlist of laptops to investigate before I settle on one to buy. Thanks for the indepth review.

I've got an old Tecra which is just about on its last legs - time to upgrade! Could I suggest that you split the opinion into paragraphs to make it a bit easier to read? :O)
