"The Eiffel Tower"

You cannot go to Paris without going to see the Eiffel Tower, even if you don’t really want to. Honestly, I wasn’t too bothered about seeing it but my husband told me I would be silly not to.

The Eiffel Tower began its construction in January of 1887 and was designed by architect Stephen Sauvestre although the idea originated from two of the chief engineers, Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier. The Eiffel Tower was designed to be the entrance/ centrepiece of the 1889 World Fair or Exposition Universelle. The whole tower only took fifteen months to construct. Over the years, changes have been made to the tower such as adding lifts and lights.

The Eiffel Tower can be found at the Champ de Mars, which is a large green space in Paris. The Eiffel Tower is easily reached by Metro and can be found at the Champ de Mars / Tour Eiffel top on line RER C. The actual tower is a little bit of a walk away from the metro station but only about five minutes. On the way there, you can walk along the river and take in the view from afar. At this point, I was less than impressed. I was expecting it to be more silver in colour for some reason and it was just a bit ugly really.

Up close, the Eiffel Tower is certainly more impressive. You can really appreciate the amount of work that went into such a big structure. The iron lattice construction is complicated and much prettier than can be seen from afar. I did enjoy looking more closely at the design of the tower and taking pictures from interesting angles. As you can walk around the whole structure, and stand directly underneath it, you can definitely appreciate what the Eiffel Tower is.

Now, something I really didn’t want to do is go up the tower. You can climb the stairs so far but then the lift has to be taken to the highest level available to visitors. At the time of our visit, it seemed like only one corner was in use and the queue was so long! Also, it costs 16 Euros to go to the highest level possible and I thought it was a bit of a rip off, even though the view would have been amazing. Instead of going up the Eiffel Tower, we chose to have a hot dog from one of the food vendors underneath and just take the time to try to enjoy what we were seeing.

Speaking of food, the Eiffel Tower does have two restaurants which we didn’t visit. There are plenty of food options close by and underneath and nothing there was ridiculously priced which was nice to see for such a big tourist attraction. We had two hot dogs, some fries and a coke and this cost us about 15 Euros. Pretty average prices really and the food was really tasty.

At night is when the Eiffel Tower should really be seen. We visited in March and the lights were turned on at around 7pm as this was when it started to get dark. I assume the lights go on earlier in winter. I really liked the Eiffel Tower at night. The lights make it look a whole lot prettier and so different from how it looks in the day time. While I was glad that we saw it in both daylight and at night time, I would choose to go again at night time easily.

The Eiffel Tower wasn’t really my cup of tea but it had to be done!

I remember climbing it on a school trip, but being disappointed as we didn't get to the very top.

Everyone likes it at night :-). I was never really impressed with it either except for seeing who could get up the stairs fastest and with least effort. But it is nice, I've come to realize, not great but nice.
