Being the owner of a TVR Tuscan once of the most important things to make sure of is getting the tyres right.
When I forst bought my Tuscan I did so even though alot of my friends and family said that I would kill myself or crash the car....Well they were nearly right and all I can say is that it is down to the tyres.
After having the car for approximately one month, I thought I had made the biggest mistake of my life the back end was coming out all over the place and I couldnt get the power down and was getting rather frustrated. So on the net I went, after hours of trawling through various websites i started to consider the tyres. They were the factory recommended tryes but they just didnt seem up to the job (they were new prior to me buying the tuscan so it wasnt that they were coming to the end of there life or anything!). Then I came across Toyo tyres, little known at the moment in this country and rediculed by some. Why rediculed? Because they were different and were not a named brand, thats why.
The Toyo is a softer compound tyre (meaning it wears more readily) however they are alot cheaper than the majority of named brands.
My Tuscan requires 255/40/18s so not the cheapest to buy for, however the cheapest I could get were just under £100 each. Trust me that is a very good price for two tyres of that size.
Once they were on the car the handling was transformed. Off the lights the grip was brilliant and I experienced what it was like to get to 60 mph very very very quickly. Corners!!!! Another thing I now love. Approach them with reasonable speed trust in the tyres and by gently accelerating at the exit you can slide the back end out nicely. With the previous tyres I would have ended up seeing where I had just been!!!
Durability - Being of a softer compound the tyres do wear more quickly than others I could mention, but they are so much cheaper also. I think I will probably get about 6000 miles out of them, but please remember we are talking about a Tuscan here. Tuscans do not respect tyres!!!!!
Availability - They are available in pretty much every size and it is very easy to find a dealer. the majority of dealers if they dont have them in stock can order them in.
Cost - As mentioned above they are not a named brand but do not compromise on performance. As stated earlier two 255/40/18s cost me approximately £200, factory resommended replacements were £400 for the two and I doubt very much whether they would have lasted twice as long. Even if they did the grip just isnt there.
Wet weather - unfortunately I cant say much on this as I have little experience of driving my car in the wet so I am sorry. However whilst doing my research originally I found many reviews stating how good they were in the wet.
I have a strong feeling that these tyres are going to do very well in the future and that anyone wanting high levels of grip and brilliant value for money should investigate further.
