I'm afraid I am going to be just a little bias on this one as it is my current car. However, I have driven a number of cars in my short but exciting few years of driving so hopefully I will be able to be a little critical.
My little black 1994 Toyota Celica GT is just perfect for me. It can rip a number of other sporty cars to pieces but does lack a bit of go from time to time. I think, were it any faster, I'd get myself in trouble :O)
Spec: 2.0ltr Twin-Cam 16-Valve engine 135 Horsepower 145@4400rpm Torque Top Speed: 139mph (maybe a teensy bit more at a push) 4-wheel steer Power Steering Bucket type sport seats in material Leather covered steering wheel Electric Climate Control Rear de-fog Electric Windows Central locking Map reading lights Auto Boot release Auto Fuel cap release Power and normal mode :O) 17" alloys Full body kit Full Kenwood sound system Cat 1 Clifford Alarm and immobilizer (essential)
I have heard that the 1994 model comes in a 2.2 ltr but I've not got that model as far as I'm aware.
Okay, so I should imagine you get the idea that you can do a lot to these cars, make them faster, make them look the dogs, etc. But does that really change the drive and general capability...nope.
I love the steering, its light and has a good turning-circle. I have found most Celicas to be a very bumpy ride a they can be slightly uncomfortable especially in the back. Although there are the standard two seats in the back, you might as well remove them a load yourself up with sounds for all the good they do. Okay for kids but a really tight squeeze for adults and there is absolutely no headroom back there.
The 1994 Celica sticks to our roads well and you do feel really safe with the responsive steering but I'm not convinced that you'd fair very well in an accident.
The centre console makes driving really comfy and even has a little drinks holder :O) There are enough buttons for the A/C to keep you amused for some length of time and a number of other buttons dotted about to keep curious didgits dancing.
I still think that the Celica is a definite womans car. Blokes would be bored within hours. I hate to sound sexist but having driven other performance cars it just dosn't compare.
Be warned about the temptation of the GT-4 as it can be nigh on impossible to insure.
As for fuel consumption...I've got no complaints..for those of us who don't work in mpg, I'll put it simply. It costs me around £35 to fill it up and I'll likely get 300-400 miles outta that. I think for the booting that this little car gets, it does extremely well.
If you are considering buying the GT, give the imports some thought. Its a far cheaper option and parts are exactly the same as UK. Okay, I agree parts aren't exactly cheap but its not like owning a GTO, Skyline, or MMX either.
I am very happy with my choice for now. I have had thoughts of selling it and I think the look sways it rather than the drive. A fun car and a cheaper sports option for most. Give it a spin and you'll either love it or hate it...you have been warned.
Good personal opinion about this great car, I used to own a supra and loved it... now after owning loads of boring saloons I've gone back to having fun again, as I've just got hold of a mint 1993 2.0 gti Celica and reckon this car is all that the supra was lacking....thanks for sharing your thoughts.... Terry.
