The Toyaota Corolla 2.0 D GS Estate is the slowest car that I have ever driven (Fact). You see it has a 2 litre, normally aspirated Diesel engine pumping out a sizzling 80 bhp ! You can floor the peddle in fifth on the motorway and go no faster until an obliging hill hoves into view. This car is fundamentally underpowered.
Given any situation where a short burst of acceleration is needed to avoid danger, the Corolla reacts like a comatose Sloth. Add to this a wife, three children and a host of shopping/luggage, you can imagine the result.
I opted for the Corolla as I wanted a Diesel for the economy, an Estate for the space and a Toyota for the reliability.
One out of three isn't bad. In fairness the Corolla never broke down and started each morning with its surprisingly muted rattle.
BUT
Fuel consumption was always hampered by the constant foot to the floor to keep up in average driving conditions.

The estate practicality is also restricted by the sloping sides of the bootspace. This makes the car look quite lean from the outside but prevents the carrying of any item of furniture except a beanbag !
Volvos are square and the biggest selling estates for a reason !
On the subject of design , the front of the car is quite tastful with flowing lines and a neat uncluttered headlamp area. The profile is quite attractive but make your way to the rear of the car and you will see why my car was nicknamed Mr Potatohead. The rear light number plate et al look as though a three year old was let loose with a new lego kit. Bits everywhere. Mind you at least people don't get to see much of it because they are are usually laughing as they overtake with ease !
