Advantages Advantages Reliable, great drive, huge capacity

Disadvantages Disadvantages windows steam up easily, inflexible seating

I've had a Picnic as a company car for two years now, and I am very attached to the car. Having given up a somewhat unreliable Mondeo estate, this car has been like a dream. The only problem has been a paintwork flaw on the door which has caused slight corrosion, but there was no quibble from the man from Toyota fixing it under warranty. The car seems to have a reasonably low centre of gravity, and is quite narrow, and it handles much more like a car than a typical people carrier. It is certainly nippy, and it drinks less petrol than the 1.8 Ford. As far as seats are concerned it is more like ... more

    Advantages Advantages Mobility, Size, Economy,

Disadvantages Disadvantages Toyota service costs, steamy windows in winter hindering visability to the sides.

My Toyota Picnic is a white 6 seater, If I could have gotten my hands on the 7 seater Japanese import at the time of purchase I would have take it. The added extras at comparable cost would have been worth it. I have had many Toyotas in the past and always found them reliable..This one does not disappoint. My family do alot of 'car based' holidaying, and the Picnic travels well. I have found it very economical on fuel and easy to handle on the road. It is a 2litre and handles like a car with plenty of 'get up and go'. You have the advantage of the roominess of larger people movers without the ... more

Advantages Advantages 7 seater with fold into the floor seats

Disadvantages Disadvantages only availble in the grey import "Ipsum"

I wanted to purchase a Vauxhall Zafira with it’s flex 7 seats, but when I say that I could get this flexible seating solution in a grey import of the Toyota Picnic (the Ipsum) I purchased the car within 2 hours of test driving it. I have never like the fact the Toyota cars all have the same “look” even though they are built 10 years apart. I dismissed the Picnic because of it’s bolted down seats 6-7 and for dated looks. But when I came across a newly imported grey market Ipsum I saw that I would get the Zafira’s flex seven seating system (Toyota had build it’s own system 3 years earlier than ... more

Advantages Advantages good value, reliable, air conditioning, useful layout with children with scope for seat swaps.

Disadvantages Disadvantages metal feels a bit thin and is potentially easily dentable, rear visibility

Brought the 2.2 diesel from a toyota dealer, owned the car for nearly four years. Mileage now about 75.000. We have three children, oldest are teenagers. the latter like the rearmost seats although the middle ones are the most comfortable with a particularly large side window and a foldable arm rest. No problems to speak of, it isn't that comfortable to drive over long distances not withstanding the adjustable seat although it might help if we had the model/extra adjustable steering wheel. Going on holiday you need a roof rack which clips onto the roof rails, for every day it is fine and it is ... more

Advantages Advantages Japanese reliability, size, price

Disadvantages Disadvantages parts/ servicing costs, consumption

We have a 1997 2litre petrol picnic. The car has huge miles (145000) and a full dealer service history. I cant fault the reliability as in 2 years the car has only once developed a fault and this was in the electronics - this is where the experience gets tricky. Sourcing these cars in breakers etc. is very difficult and this makes parts expensive. If you can find a breaker who has one they are usually as expensive as a new part due to the scarcity of them. Apart from that and the thirst element (mine averages 26mpg!) the car is great for running kids to school and when the rear seats are ... more
