Is this the future of motoring?

Advantages: Running costs, low emissions, features, reliable
Disadvantages: Fuel consumption could be better

HISTORY OF THE TOYOTA PRIUS

Work started in 1994 & the original Prius was introduced in 1997 & two years later in the UK. It was years ahead of its time & due to the enormous cost of producing the special battery that powers the car, Toyota subsidised the cost to allow the public to buy the car at an affordable price.
It never sold in great numbers, however when the second version was introduced (and the subject of this ...
...a couple of years after Toyota but never had the same success, now many other car makers are developing their versions so hybrids will become more popular.

Are they the answer to our problems? Are these cars any good in the real world?

I was fortunate enough to drive two separate models in different circumstances over the period of three days a couple of months ago. One was driven around ... more

The planet is still not safe...

Advantages: Cheap to run, individual style, well-equipped
Disadvantages: Still won't save the planet

...known as 'park', so why Toyota feel the need to confuse us further I have no idea. The gear system is a variable transmission rather than a complete auto, which means that you don't notice the gear change as you would in other cars. The variable transmission, however, is necessary because of the little Toyota's unique engine. This is a hybrid, which means it has both a 1.5 litre petrol engine and an electric engine, known as the Hybrid Synergy Drive. ...
...quirky and undeniably cool. Toyota estimate that this system cuts fuel consumption by 40% and they state on their website that the car will return an average of 65.7 miles to the gallon on a combined cycle. Depending on your independent motoring magazine of choice, however, some of these figures are disputed. On the motorway, at an average speed of 70mph, I saw the car return just shy of 40mpg; not bad by any medium-sized car's standards. Around ...

Electrifying!

Advantages: Hybrid, comfortable, great gadgets, safe, stylish.
Disadvantages: Still fairly expensive, sadly won't appeal to the "Chelsea Tractor" owners!

...50MPG. After care from Toyota is very good too. I've had to take it in for one minor problem (Seatbelt buckle was a little noisy) and they handle you and your car very well with plenty of information about all that they are doing and a quick service. The TSpirit is available for around £22000 from the Toyota dealers but I got mine through newcardiscuont.com for several thousand less. It is delivered through them from an RRG dealer and is a genuine ...
...straight from the Toyota dealer, so there are no problems there. The price tag may put some people off but bear in mind the savings on fuel and the fact that you get a year's tax for under £30!!! Insurance group is, I believe, typically 8 so very reasonable. Overall, a great car that is safe, reliable, fun and lowers your CO2 emissions. You can't ask for too much more! ...

Toyota Prius - We Should All Have One

Advantages: Low CO2 - Good MPG (if driven in the way it should be)
Disadvantages: Not the prettiest car in the world

Toyota Prius Review - "Hybrid Heaven" Want to achieve over 60mpg? Want to avoid congestion charge? Want to pay low benefit in kind tax? You can now do all this and more in comfortable well built, well specified large automatic hatchback whilst saving the planet at the same time. Sound too good true? It's not. Everyone has heard of hybrid cars, but I suspect very few people have actually ever driven one, because if they had, all you would ever see ...
...Toyota Prius. Now I am not coming at this from any kind of virtuous green position, I am simply testing a car, to see how good it is and the answer in this case is a resounding "very good". I had tested the much acclaimed Honda Civic Hybrid over a 2 week period which we didn't like. We found it impossible to achieve any of the manufacturer's claims for the vehicle. Maybe I had a faulty one? I don't know, but certainly it is not a car I could recommend ...

Toyota Prius T-Spirit

Advantages: Great MPG, Big Inside, Looks Good
Disadvantages: Won't do 0-60 fast

A friend of mine recommended the car to me and, having decided to start test driving cars, I went straight for this as first option. I was attracted by it's MPG and the "novelty" value of owning a Hybrid car. After signing the paperwork and paying my deposit I started to do some real in depth study of other people's experiences. I noticed quite a few comments of poor fuel consumption which gave me some cause for concern. Anyway, picked the car up ...
...performance. I have not been disappointed at all. Around Milton Keynes on journeys of over 10 miles I get 55 mpg and out on the motorways and longer cruises I am getting 53 mpg. . Last week around the M25 in 7am rolling traffic I achieved 58 mpg over 90 miles. There is a learning curve with driving this car. No engine resistance when slowing down is the norm, although the gearbox's "B" option will engage this for you if needed. The secret is to ...
