Review of "Tranquility Mini Health Farm"
"We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to Tranquility. The most therapeutic place in town. Where our highly qualified therapist will devote time to discover who you are and ensure your experience is specifically customised to your lifestyle and personality."So reads the web site blurb for Tranquility, a mini Health Farm "the only one of its kind in Berkshire".
I found the site through an advert they had placed in our local paper a few months ago and was intrigued. Actually the web site - www.minihealthfarm.co.uk doesn't give a whole lot more information than the newspaper advert, but what particularly drew my attention in the paper were the lovely inviting pictures of a palm treed garden / patio area, Jacuzzi, lounge seats and generally relaxing oriental-looking environment and the "Couples Special Romantic Night", where you could spoil your partner (and yourself) to a private exclusive experience. Which I thought would be a perfect wedding present for my hubby-to-be on the run up to our wedding. The rest of the advert read: "Relax in the hot and bubbly Jacuzzi surrounded by palm trees and candle lights. Followed by a sauna and a luxury ½ hour beauty treatment of your choice. Complementary soft drinks, strawberries and chocolates served. The ultimate romantic evening dedicated just to you and your partner. After hours 7.00pm - 9.00pm - 2 hours = £35 each".
I was keen straight away and thought the price was very good, especially for having the place to just the 2 of you, but I did also have some reservations which prevented me from booking straight away. The web site is like a page from a newspaper, it doesn't look very professional and made me wonder what to expect. It gives you all the information you need and yet there could be a lot more to entice you to make a booking. You can't book online for instance. There could also be much better use of pictures, you almost feel they might be hiding something. However, I decided to take the plunge and booked the couples session for us on the Wednesday before our wedding (Saturday 29th July), little did I know how much we'd need it!You probably should visit somewhere more than once to give it a proper appraisal but I don't know when I'll next be able to treat myself in this way and as far as I'm concerned I would like to let people know about this little haven of calm. So all those who live near Cippenham, Slough, Berkshire; if you're in need of a massage or a bit of a de-stress, I can highly recommend Tranquility because it does the trick! I haven't felt that relaxed in a long time and it can only be said that I have never felt so stressed beforehand either.
We'd had a particularly manic day driving all over the place and receiving frantic wedding related phone calls from family at the last minute and then rushing back to where we live for the surprise. I hadn't told Lee (my partner) what was booked and only at the last minute told him to have a quick shower and stick his swimming shorts on. I think he thought we were going down the swimming baths. We got a taxi to the health farm and immediately got worried as we were driven to a housing estate where there couldn't possibly be a health farm. I had a sinking feeling as we walked up to a respectable looking house with a small sign stating it was Tranquility and thought maybe it was the wrong kind of massage parlour!! Lee didn't look too keen either, even when we entered the house, because it is quite clearly a house that has been converted and the living room still looks a bit like a living room. However, the 2 staff that greeted us were very professional in manner and dress. We were shown through to a small, clean wooden style changing room containing lockers, a shower and sauna and told to change into our swim suits and then go over to the Jacuzzi. Still a bit nervous of our surroundings I explained what the evening was all about to Lee and showed him the newspaper article and he started to relax. He couldn't believe that we had the entire place to ourselves. Off we went to the Jacuzzi and the lady explained what the evening would entail and that we should relax and enjoy ourselves, and so we did.
Whilst in the Jacuzzi we had time to reflect on our surroundings. Having got over the odd feeling of invading someone's home we could appreciate how much effort has actually gone into creating a very tranquil area in quite a small space. The converted garden (about average newly built house size) has tall bamboo sheeting around the walls closing off the outside world, palm trees and lush green plantation interspersed with Bird of Paradise plants (lovely tropical orange flowers). I think much of the planting is fake (it may not be, I'm only going on my own gardening skills) but it's very well done and not noticeably fake. There is lovely tinkly new age type music playing softly in the background and pleasant smells wafting about (probably from joss sticks). The floor is decked and surfaces are clean and bedecked with small candles. The whole thing is covered by awnings so you can't see the sky but also no one can see you. There is also a conservatory area where there are several places to sit or lie and a chair swing in the corner. It's very tastefully decorated with huge swag curtains. There is also what I think is a dry sauna, but I didn't use it. The garden area looks professional and makes you forget where you are. We were very impressed with it and is a lovely place to be.Back to the Jacuzzi; I never realised they were so deep! I also hadn't accounted for us having a heat wave and was worried about dipping into warm water followed by a sauna. Strangely, even though it was an incredibly hot day, once in the water you cool down. I don't know why, as the temperature of the water was very warm. The sauna has seats for up to about 8 or 10 people so it would be quite fun bringing a group of friends here for a joint pampering session (you can book girly nights as well) but I wouldn't want to share it with anyone I didn't know. All the seats are at different depths. I know that because when I sat down the water and bubbles were up to my chin and I became a bit alarmed when I was told I was already in the shallowest seat! I'm not a swimmer and realised Lee might have to rescue me at some point. I did however abandon all caution and let go of the side several times, to grab my drink! You are invited to bring along a bottle of your favoured bubbly with you which you can enjoy in the Jacuzzi. You are also provided with water and apparently soft drinks. It was quite amusing drinking from my glass, as the water was so high the glass bobbed on the surface and I had to more or less stand up to take a sip. The seats also have varying strengths of bubbles blasting out at different areas of the body.
After half an hour the therapist returned to refill our glasses and check we were ok. As it was hot we could can chose how we wanted to divide our time between this and the sauna. I'd never been in a sauna before so we decided to stick to 45 minutes in the Jacuzzi and only half an hour in the sauna. The rest of the time would be to wind down and relax in the seating area and then have a treatment. I liked the fact that it wasn't all set in stone.
About the only thing we didn't like about the Jacuzzi was the fairly strong smell of chlorine and the bubbles which seemed to be caused by it. The therapist told us the bubbles were caused by soap suds left in our suits after washing but they were both new so it didn't really explain it.
On to the sauna... They come over to let you know when your session is over but you can amble over to the sauna in your own time, no one bothers you or hurries you up and you can spend as much or as little time in there or just relaxing on the seating. The sauna is very small but fine for 2 people, it probably seats 4 sitting upright but 2 lying down. It was clean, tasteful, very Swedish looking and boiling! I sometimes have problems with my breathing, i.e. I feel like I can't breathe (like with panic attacks) but there's nothing actually wrong with me, so initially the warmth took my breath away and I thought I wouldn't be able to stay in there very long. However, it's weirdly nice and once you get used to it and all the sweating, it opens all your pores and seems very therapeutic (Lee got spots afterwards though). I stayed in there for about 15 minutes and that was fine for me, Lee a bit longer. Outside there was a bowl of strawberries and 2 Ferrero Rocher for us to nibble on as well, although being a chocolate lover I was slightly disappointed with this because chocolate to me does not just equal only 2.We both showered and then used the remainder of the time giving each other our wedding presents. (Which if you're interested were little hip flasks). We felt a bit like kids trying out all the chairs and loungers and then the swing and just using the time to chat and relax. Finally we had the choice of 3 therapies which last 30 minutes: a back massage with Indian Head massage, pedicure or facial with face massage. We both opted for the first. I went first and by now we'd dried off quite considerably so didn't feel all damp and uncomfortable lying down. The back massage was absolutely fab. The head massage was intense as a lot of pressure is applied to the scalp but it left me feeling very light and rejuvenated. You are warned first that there are oils used in the massage and in your hair so you should avoid it if you're not comfortable having extremely oily hair afterwards. Apparently all the oils and creams that are used are Clarins ones which I was also pleased to know because I have eczema and find creams like Clarins are better for my skin. At the end the therapist said that I had a build up of toxins in my scalp which was why I'd been feeling tense. And I said I had fallen in love with her because at that moment I felt so fantastic. I do wish that we hadn't drunk alcohol though because it leaves you light headed and woozy and you don't need it to enjoy yourselves here. While Lee was having his massage I went and got dressed then lay on one of the loungers and let myself drift away to the sounds of the tinkly music and the next thing I knew Lee had come over to wake me up. He had thoroughly enjoyed his massage too.
We've both had massages before and felt in comparison these were the best we'd ever had. Also the experience was the best value for money. So, according to their statement: do they "discover who you are" - well they are very friendly and attentive and make you feel at home. You chose your own therapy so I couldn't exactly say they "ensure your experience is specifically customised to your lifestyle", but afterwards they explained the other therapies available and suggested Lee has a sports massage next time. One thing they could improve on is that when you book you are also asked to pay in advance by card, as I did this over the phone there was a lot of trust on my part and I never received any written confirmation of our booking beforehand, this would've have alleviated my niggling worries. I feel that payment could also be taken on the day.
However, overall If we were a bit anxious beforehand we were more than happy when we left and serenely Tranquil and can't wait to go back.Extra Info: other options include:
