lonely planet malaysia,singapore and brunei
Advantages: accurate Disadvantages: carrying it about everywhere!
This book was with me on my 6months travels round south east asia recently. It was extremely helpful and accurate, unlike other lonely planets I have read which has lead me to all sorts of places. The content not only covers the main sightseeing spots but gives you hidden extras that are definitely worth checking out.The accommodation sections are sometimes questionable and it is worth checking these out before you book anything in advance but overall ... ...some of the best experiences of my life,in particular the hidden beautiful Malaysian islands on the East coast.Having taken my time to explore the different countries, the itineraries for shorter trips at the start of each chapter are definitely worth considering, they give a good guide to the main spots worth seeing if your time is limited. The overview of the culture, religion, history is an interesting read and you should make that your aeroplane read ...

Indispensible for outing yourself as a tourist in Southern Africa
Advantages: Comprehensive, up-to-date, well researched Disadvantages: cumbersome to carry
...guidebook for Namibia, Lesotho and South Africa in one. Unfortunately Lonely Planet do not have such a guide but their South Africa guide also included Lesotho (and Swaziland) which meant that rather than take two books for these two countries I was able to take them in a single volume. The one problem I find with some Lonely Planets is that they become very bulky for a large country like South Africa - and unless you are really travelling throughout ... ...domestic tourism for poorer non-white South Africans - brandishing a Lonely Planet just draws further, unwanted attention to yourself - the book is therefore not something you should really brandish in public, unless you want the attention it brings you. I would personally pay extra to have the individual provinces in thinner paperback booklets - that way you could carry them and look at them without fear of attracting the unwanted attention. Nowadays ...

The Truth about Italy
Advantages: Tells you about the REAL Italy Disadvantages: Some chapters can be heavy going
While television and the internet may have developed the phenomenon yet further, the idea of the armchair tourist is not that new. In the nineteenth century well-to-do young men set off on the "Grand Tour" to see Europe and bring back souvenirs from, in particular, Greece and Italy. It was at this time that many British people found out, through the drawings and paintings executed by these young men, in essence the forerunners of the Inter-railing ... ...albeit in pictorial form, what the pyramids or the Colisseum looked like. Thanks to technology we have live news reports beamed to our television sets from the other side of the world, we can watch New Year being celebrated in Sydney under the famous Harbour Bridge while thousands of miles away our celebrations are yet to commence. We eat food from all over the world and we can communicate in real time with people in other continents. We can cross ...

When beggars can't be choosers
Advantages: Only book available in English so far Disadvantages: Lack of attention to detail, overly studious and stuffy
...year for a trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina, I was surprised to find that neither publisher has yet published a book on this country. The only guide I could find was published by Bradt in 2008. I’ve used Bradt guides before but I wouldn’t buy one if Lonely Planet or Rough Guides have a guide for that destination. I didn’t get to look at the book before buying; I had a voucher for Play.com and bought straight from the website. That said, I don’t think ... ...the way of guiding. Still Bosnia is still relatively undeveloped when it comes to tourism and there are at least a good number of suggestions for the major towns as well as some less obvious countryside places although I would say that a good many of them require a car to get to. As you would expect there are recommendation for accommodation and eating although I’d say there are fewer than in other guidebook publications and I felt that as far as ...
