It would appear that Travel Insurance Web don't quite understand the definition of 24 hour or in fact emergency. Three frustrating calls later and there was still no answer.
Whilst in the taxi on the way to the hospital I ended up calling the Tesco Compare helpline number I had ... ...with a sales member at Travel Insurance Web. They finally got someone to call me back about an hour later whilst I was in the hospital. The terrible performance continued, despite being told they would call me a little later that day to confirm everything was ok, no such call was received. I doubt that Travel Insurance Web will be providing a re-imbursement of the expensive mobile phone calls made from abroad.
I found the insurance through Tesco Compare, looked promising and reasonable cover for a reasonable amount of money. How wrong can I be...

A very helpful lady there managed to transfer me through after about 15 minutes where I was able to leave my name and number with a sales member at Travel Insurance Web. They finally got someone to call me back about an hour later whilst I was in the hospital. The terrible performance continued, despite being told they would call me a little later that day to confirm everything was ok, no such call was received. I doubt that Travel Insurance Web will be providing a re-imbursement of the expensive mobile phone calls made from abroad.
Thankfully we caught the malaria early (with some typhoid for good measure - but that's Africa!) and got the correct medication straight away. Private medical healthcare was relatively cheap (seeing a doctor at a *private* clinic was about £3, a blood test £3 and three packs of drugs and a bum injection about £4) and I don't think we reached the excess so I guess I'll never know at how unwilling they are to pay.
Either way, I would highly recommend spending the extra few pounds for peace of mind with an insurance company that actually provides a service. For an insurance company to advertise a 24 hour helpine for emergencies and then the phone to go unanswered is poor to say the least.

Read a review in Which magazine that rated Travel Insurance Web as Highly Recemmended, so I thought I'd take a look. The website was very easy to get information, the quote process took less than 30 seconds and the prices were unbeleivable. The price guarantee was also great but I've yet to find a cheaper policy so haven't been able to claim my free policy. I ended up buying an annual policy for under £25 and it was about £10 cheaper than the nearest competitor I found. Also had higher levels of cover. Brilliant. ...

The website is very user friendly, loads quickly and allows you to do what you want to do with the minimum of fuss. I have never known it crash on me or be off-line when I need it.
LTSB also have a telephone banking service which I’ve never used (I HATE the telephone), but friends tell me it’s also good ...

After reading a comment on rapidinsure I tried to book a weeks travelinsurance over the web.
For over a week now their site displays the following message:-
"Due to circumstances beyond our control RapidInsure.co.uk is currently unable to take payment. You are however free to continue viewing the site, and the newly-updated Member Services area is now available for existing customers to use".

I have only been with Cahoot for around 6 months - and transferred in after a terribly bad experience with the Nat West.
I am particularly impressed with Cahoots service where you can choose your own interest rate option with their credit card services. I also like the idea of a better rate of interest if you don't have a cheque book. I also like the statements being available on line - this wasn't available when I banked with the Nat West (and they keep them available on line for twelve months!)
Loads of 'nice' links on their web site to 'wills', 'travel' and 'life' insurance.
I think the only thing that really lets them down is the site down time. It is actually quite predictable, so I tend to avoid early morning-weekend log ons. ...
