...pirate classics of my childhood, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. The first time i came to know of Treasure Island was an excerpt in my school English text book, and that made me want to have this book. Finally managed to get hold of it, and i was just enthralled by the book. This was not my first brush with Stevenson, one of his earlier novels, Kidnapped, was our English class textbook( albeit in an abridged form).
The novel is the story ... ...that which leads to burried treasure of the notorious pirate Capt Flint, at Skeleton Island in the Carribean. The naive Trelawney plans an expedition to the island on the ship, the Hispaniola, and is tricked into taking Flint's ex mate, Long John Silver. Long John is one of the most crooked persons and he plans to mutiny and take over the ship. During the expedition Jim overhears Silver's wicked plan and he alerts the ship captain Smollett. When ...

...shipmates! Have you read Treasure Island? Or do you just think you have? When I ordered this book I wasn't actually sure whether I'd read it before or not, so ingrained are the characters and phrases from the book in our language. But as it turns out I hadn't - I had watched Muppet Treasure Island and probably seen some report on Blue Peter years ago.
Treasure Island was written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published in 1883. I don't have a great ... ...Stevenson wrote Treasure Island for the amusement of his 12 year old stepson, but the story is just as entertaining for adults. In that way it reminds me of the Harry Potter books - they are also adventure tales, and the hero of Treasure Island (Jim Hawkins) is quite similar to Harry himself.
The book is told mostly from the viewpoint of Jim Hawkins, a young lad working in the Admiral Benbow inn near the coast somewhere in Britain in the 18th century. ...

Ahoy, matey! Review ofTreasure Island - Robert Louis Stevensonby

Advantages: A great story for kids, especially a boy Disadvantages: Sometimes a little hard to understand
...and I knew there was treasure to be had inside of it!
The narrator is Jim Hawkins, son of the innkeepers of the Admiral Benbow Inn. A mysterious stranger, Billy Bones, lives at the inn and likes to spin stories, including the one about the one-legged man who he warns Jim to keep a watch for. A blind man appears and so frightens Billy Bones with the black spot that he dies of a stroke. Jim and his mother find Billy's sea chest, and in there is a ... ...recognize the map as a treasure map made by the evil Captain Flint. The Squire purchases a ship called "the Hispaniola," hired a crew and a captain, Captain Smollet. The cook is perhaps the most famous name in the book - Long John Silver. He is a one-legged man, too.
Jim discovers that some of Smollett's crew were part of Flint's crew, and are plotting to kill them all and take the treasure. Once on the island, most go ashore, including Jim, who ...

Advantages: Adventure on the high seas, Pirates, Long John Silver, Coming of age Disadvantages: Understanding Pirate Talk, Realisation you're parents deprived you of a good book
The story and adventure constantly come at you as though waves stretch across the golden sands of 'Treasure Island'. Coaxing you out into the blue horizon and reaching out towards the edge of the earth on the 'Hispaniola' to find out where the next chapter will take you.
And you will not be disappointed, each chapter has a new turn of events which constantly keep you wanting more. The great ability of the book is keeping the characters alive in ... ...even hate them or love them.
I particularly found the ability in conveying Long John Silver as the chaotically suave 'gentleman' that he is, very effective in generating my illicit need to be a pirate and go on many of his previous adventures of which my imagination takes me. The method of writing, and including the smallest and insignificant of details, is able to spin the image of the grand docks or of the island itself in the centre of your minds ...
