I received a phone call from my university student daughter last week commanding me to get myself down to the library and pick up a couple of books by Gina Davidson called “Treasure: The Trials of a Teenage Terror” and the follow up book called “What Treasure Did Next”. My daughter wondered if I was the secret author of these books using a pseudonym as it was as if someone had been a fly on the wall in our house during her horrible teenage years.
I dutifully trotted off to the library the next day and picked up both of the books. I then spent the next two evenings doubled up with hysterical laughter and had to keep reading out sections to my other two little “treasures” as they where so intrigued as to what could render me helpless and crying laughing in a heap.
As the titles suggest “Treasure” is Gina Davidson’s teenage monster. She is never referred to be name, only ever “Treasure”. Treasure’s chums, although often referred to by name are also known as “The Collaborators”. Gina’s friends are “The Advisors” The first book deals with Treasures escapades aged thirteen to fourteen and “What Treasure Did Next” then follows on from age fifteen to sixteen.
Any mother who has a teenage daughter will find something, and if your really unlucky like me, nearly everything in this book to relate to. Maybe because it’s all behind me now and we can both laugh about those years is why I find it so funny. Perhaps it wouldn’t be so funny if we were still going through it. Every chapter deals with a different crisis or drama: attitude, horrible friends eating you out of house and home, bleaching hair and mum paying a fortune at the hairdressers to put it right, smoking, the crap in the bedroom, tattoo’s, piercing, boyfriends, telephone abuse, are yes the list just goes on and on…happy days! If your little treasures haven’t reached their teens yet then maybe you should read this anyway, after all, forewarned is forearmed.
These books where both written in the nineties so I think that they will have to be ordered from bookstores now. I got my copies from the library.
