The Tropicana range of fruit juices has enjoyed much success over the last few years with its orange juices becoming one of the most popular fresh brands. However still relatively unknown is the Sanguinello variety which may well be the best of range...

PACKAGING

Much like the rest of the Tropicana range it comes packaged in 1 litre white card cartons. Predominantly white with green and red lettering, it features the striking image of a sliced blood orange on the front of the carton (see below for an image). The robust design with screw cap allows the bottle to be shaken without leaking even once the seal is broken.

BLOOD ORANGES

For those unfamiliar with this exotic

fruit, Sanguinello is one of three varieties of blood orange. Externally they look similar to the standard orange aside from the occasional wash of red across the skin. Inside, however, the fruit is a dark crimson, a similar colour to blood, from where the fruit gets its name. This colour is caused by a red pigment called anthocyanin, not usually found in citrus fruits but common in other red fruits and flowers. It also has distinctive health benefits which are discussed below.

THE JUICE

Pouring it out you will find the juice has a strong red colour (though much lighter than the flesh of the fruit) and a light aroma. At first it looks more like tomato juice than orange, due in part to the consistency. It contains "bits" and, unlike the traditional orange Tropicana, there is no "smooth" variety of Sanguinello. Nevertheless the additional fibre is an added health benefit. As with all juices of this sort, always ensure you shake the carton before pouring else you will find it becomes unpleasantly thick towards the end of the carton.

HEALTH BENEFITS

The Sicilian red oranges are amongst the healthiest oranges around and the associated health benefits stretch to the juice too.

Unsurprisingly this is a great source of Vitamin C. A 250ml glass provides 100% of your RDA of Vitamin C which has been shown to diminish risk of heart disease, cancer and cholestorol build-up as well as aiding the body's natural repair process.

More interestingly the anthocyanin which gives the fruit its distinctive crimson colour is an antioxidant known to reduce risks of many illnesses including age-related ones. As such Tropicana Sanguinello can certainly be considered a healthier option than an average glass of orange juice.

Finally, as Tropicana advertise, their juice is entirely free of cholesterol, sodium and fat.

PRICE

The downside to this great drink remains the price. It has dropped somewhat and particularly if bought utilising store multibuy deals it is often possible to pick them up for as little as £1.50 each. It remains expensive, but that is the cost of high quality juices not made from concentrate.

Although expensive enough to reduce it by a star, Tropicana Sanguinello still gets a hearty recommendation for offering an overwhelmingly great taste while being even healthier than the average orange juice.
