Quality
This device is very well made. Microsoft knows how to build a mouse (or mousing device) to last. The wire connection is much better protected than many other trackballs I have seen. The buttons and scroll wheel are built to take use and last for quite some time.
Features
As most trackballs have these days, the Trackball Explorer boasts programmable buttons as well as the attractive trackball. In addition to being able to adjust the buttons, you can also adjust the trackball and scroll wheel speeds and behavior. I set up one of these for one of our accounting people and set the left and right click on either side of the scroll wheel, the scroll wheel also serves as a double click. The right side buttons were set as Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+P). One of the best features of this is that it behaves as the keyboard shortcut...

Advantages: Very nice ergonomic design Disadvantages: Appaling quality control or manufacturing process
..., this is the primary mouse button (left mouse button in most people's case). There are 2 other buttons on top of the device, these behave as the 2 buttons on any other mouse.
The trackball itself is very small, it's about the size of a mouse ball, which makes it much smaller than other trackball balls. This would not be a problem if the ball used 'optical' technology to detect ball movement, as per some more expensive trackballs form logitech.
No, the little ball uses little rollers to sense movement, and these fail very quickly. I don't think it's fluff that causes the problem, as the second unit I had lasted less than an hour.
Typically, the mouse pointer on screen will start to refuse to move past a certain point in a given direction, and removing the ball for cleaning provides only very brief satisfaction. I can't really put my finger on what...

Advantages: Very accurate, sleek design Disadvantages: Control not as instictive as mouse
...a sturdy base for the user’s hand to rest on. The trackball sits on top of the unit at the far end. On either side of the trackball sit the left and right hand selection buttons, just like on a standard mouse.
You rest the palm of your hand on the unit and this brings the trackball into reach of your fingers. The buttons are also within easy reach.
The trackball is connected to the computer by a reasonably long cord which has a USB connection at the end. Also provided is an adapter that plugs into the USB connector on the end of the cord, and this allows you to run the trackball through the PS/2 mouse connection on the computer.
The unit is dark grey in colour with the trackball a see-through red colour. It feels pretty sturdy and robust so shouldn’t fall apart in the hand!
In Use
The trackball can be plugged straight into the computer...

This really does have to be the best of Logitechs cordless series.
For those of you that are unaware of what a trackball is, imagine an upsidedown mouse. So instead of moving the mouse around the table you just move the ball.

I picked these up in Asda about a week ago, simply because they were so cheap at £11.74. There were to go on the wee mans computer as I nicked the original ones!
