I have a 7 months old daughter and already during my pregnancy i searched for a perfect bathing tub for her...and after looking through many internet forums I came to the decison that a Tummy Tub seems to be exactly what I´m looking for ;). Today I´d like to tell you about our experiences with that bathing tub that every midwife and pediatrician recommend...well, at least the producer of the Tummy Tub, DomoVital says that ;).
The Tummy Tub is actually not a bathing tub but rather a bucket. Some people might find it strange to bath a baby in a bucket ;).
1. Some general information
The Tummy Tub is produced by DomoVital. They are from Germany, their adress is:
On that website you get plenty of information about that bathing bucket. And many advantages are named. After reading it you still "hey, why people ever bathed babies in usual bathing tubs until today?".
Domovital says: The TummyTub is for children from birth up to 3 years. As is designed like a womb, babies feel very comfortable in there and enjoy bathing a lot. In the Tummy Tub they adapt the natural foetal position and they can relax good while bathing. They could never submerse/duck. Furthermore the TummyTub helps when the babies are having bellyache. The anti-skid base and low centre of gravity are for safety and stability, so the parents can relax as well as they don´t have to fear that the TummyTub can topple down. Because of the compact size you need less water that in a usual bathing tub, so the TummyTub is ecologique as you need not much water. Furthermore the water stays warm for a longer time. As it is so small and light its also easy to take it with you on journeys. And the material, the TummyTub is made of, is made of environmentally friendly materials, and the children can even bite into it and nothing bad happens.
Sounds good? Yes, I found that sounds good and so i bought a TummyTub. TummyTubs are available, at least here in Germany, in every shop that sells articles for babies. They are available in the colours "clear" and "clear with blue glitter dots". Both variants make in possible that you can see the baby completly even when its body is underwater.
A TummyTub is expensive if you compare the price with usual baby bathing tubs. In Germany you have to pay around 20 Euros ( about £14). I bought our TummyTub on Ebay for the half of that price and since the seller lived in my hometown Berlin i was able to go there and fetch it, so I saved the shipping costs :).
The argument that really convinced me to buy a TummyTub was the promise that i helps if the baby has bellyache. Since during my pregnancy everybody told me that all babies have bellyache and that for month :-o.
2. The Tummy Tub in everyday use...
Almost 5 months we bathed our daughter 2-3 times in the week in the TummyTub.
The first bath she took when she was about ten days old. We filled the TummyTub with water...sounds easy but it was actually not that easy because the lines, that should show the parents how much water they should add (maximal) are very very difficult to read. There are lines on the TummyTub that should actually show "for a 4 kilograms heavy baby you need this amount of water", "for a 5 kilogram baby you need that much water" etc., but it is not easy to read as the lines are in the same clear colour as the TummyTub itself. So I took a marker and made the lines blue :). But well, you need after all really not much water. So the producers promise, that you safe a lot of water when you use the TummyTub instad of a usual baby bathing tub is true.
At the beginning of every bathing time our bathing thermometer showed 37°Celsius, the right temperature for a baby bath. And at the end of the bath it was still the same temperature. So, the TummyTub let the water stay longer warm? Well, I do not really believe it as it is just made of plastic and no heat insulating materials. At least the surface area of the water is a bit smaller then in a usual bathing tub, that could make a slightly difference. But I think the most easy explanation for the constant temperature of the water is that a bath for a baby just takes very few minutes and so fast does the water not cool down.
To hold the baby and wash it at the same time seems to be definitly impossible to me. The baby can duck if you do not hold it (at the neck, later, when the baby holds its head alone under the armpits) with both hands. But, how to wash the baby without hands? Impossible....So we bathed her only together..my boyfriend hold our daughter and i washed her. So a TummyTub is not a good bathing tub for parents who want to wash their child without there partner. Its also not easy to wash the baby in the TummyTub. The bigger the baby gets the more difficult it is to get with the hands next to the baby into the water and to wash everything. At the age of 5 months our daughter was to big for the TummyTub and she is an average big baby! The producer of the TummyTub claimed that it can used up to the age of 3 years. I doubt that a lot, the children would get stuck in the tub ;).
During the very first bath I almost got shocked. The TummyTub is not as tilt resistant as the producer claims! The TummyTub almost overturned!!!! I just putted my hand into it to wash my daughter when it almost overturned. I was very shocked. I never thought that could happen so easy. In the meantime I heard such storys from a few other parents too! I would advice you to very careful, not to trust the producers promise that it can not overturn and you should always use it on the floor, never on the diaper changing table or any other higher place.
Wether the TummyTub helps again bellyache i did not found out. Our daughter just never had bellyache :). But i can imagine that it works, because warm water and angled legs help against bellyache, also for adults. But there are no TummyTubs for adults on the market ;).
Well, we found the TummyTub relatively impractical, but nevertheless we recommand it. Why? Thats easy: our daughter loved it. She liked it that she could angle her legs like babys do in the belly of their mummys during the pregnancy. It seemed like she found that very comfortable. She was never afraid of bathing and she always smiled when we bathed her. And I think its most important that the baby likes it :)
conclusion
Well, the TummyTub can overturn and you actually need 2 people to bath one baby. Furthermore I hardly believe that the TummyTub keeps the water warm for a long time, so do not let the bathing time last to long. And the lines that show how much water you should add into the tub are hardly readable and its a good idea to take a marker and draw the lines with it again. But after all the TummyTub is a good invention. The babys seem to like it more then a usual tub and it helps again bellyache. So I recommend it and rate it with 3 stars.
Advantages: makes bath time easier, water stays warm for longer, babies feel safe Disadvantages: son outgrew the Tummy Tub at 4 months old as it was too restrictive
...Visitor told me about the Tummy Tub as she had used it to bathe her children when they were young babies. Bathing a young baby can be very fiddly and I just didn't seem to have enough hands, so I ordered the Tummy Tub from Mothercare and it cost £19.99.
The Tummy Tub looks like a bucket and is a unique womb shaped clear tub, which helps your baby to relax and be calm in the familiar foetal position. As the surface area of the bath is small, the ... ...Tummy Tub can also help to make your baby feel confident and secure. The Tummy Tub has a 13cm / 5inch water mark and the water should come up to your baby's chest. If your baby is very young, for the first few weeks it is recommended that you increase the level of water so that your baby's shoulders are covered. All you need to do is adjust the level of water depending on the weight of your baby. If you baby is bigger, reduced the amount of water ...

...the first time. Company behind Tummy Tub took that into account and 'invented' natural tub for bathing babies.
With the first child we opted for usual equipment and occasionally had problems getting baby into the water (depending on the mood). For the second baby my wife got excited about Tummy Tub and we got it as a present from her brother.

Position is different than in the standard bath but I wouldn't say it is too natural either. Baby gets confused as parents are in unnatural situation trying to reach dirtiest parts of the body and - oh, surprise - baby is sitting on its bottom.
- The baby can be immersed in the water up to shoulder level and will therefore ...

...to the shape of the tummy tub hugging the babys body and baby stays warm longer for the same reason.
My baby loved being immersed up to the shoulders and was less scared of being undressed and so didnt cry. When put into a regular baby bath he felt exposed and insecure.
It is very useful for a colicky baby- the warm water soothes and distracts at the same time- its worth the money just for this alone.

It takes up hardly any space to store, and if you pack it with baby bath items-eg bath solution, babyshampoo, towels, cotton wool etc it forms its own storage container.
CONS
The fill line was difficult to see but I overcame this by simply using a permanent marker pen to make it easy to see. It was annoying to have do it but very easy.
It does take a bit of practice to be confident in holding a younger baby but once you ...

Advantages: Provides comfort and security for baby that open baths can't Disadvantages: Not stocked everywhere
I absolutely love this product. When I first saw the picture of the baby sat in a bucket I thought it was cruel until I tried it for myself.
For the first 2 weeks DD hated the bath. She screamed constantly during bath time and for approx 30 mins after. I never even considered the TummyTub whilst pregnant and to be honest I thought it was just another money making fad. However, at a loss as to how to make bath times good I searched my city for a TummyTub. I had to drive 30 mins down the road to find one but it was well worth the trip.
It was a 2 man job at first. Mummy held baby's head above the water whilst Daddy washed baby's body. To our surprise DD was silent, just basking in the warm water surrounding her body. She'd had a tough first few days of her life and the water was obviously making her feel safe and secure. AS DD grew ...
Advantages: It keeps baby amused for a long time Disadvantages: A wee bit on the heavy side
old to be THAT specific...... I believe it is the weighted yellow stones which add this extra weight, and that is why I must question their being there. They do give it an extra treat for the kids but this could honestly be just as cute without them.
Now my little baby is only 4 and a half months old, but when I sit him in his TUMMYTUB (see my op on that), he will sit for ages sploshing about with his turtle in water...as the tub allows it never to go out of reach.
The wobblin turtle is recommended for 3months and up and I think this is well decided.....But I am a great fan of fisher price so I dont really have too many bad things to say against them.
I know that when my baby learns to crawl, this toy will play a great part in encouraging him to chase after the rolling ball, as indeed the duck in a ball encourage my last two ...

later and was on a lot of medication and in a lot of pain. I was incredibly tired and just could not face having to get up every couple of hours to feed him.
I started Oliver on Cow and Gate Premium but found that it didn't agree with his tummy and was making him colicky and constipated. Fortunately my partner had seen the Cow and Gate Omneo Comfort when he had bought the last tub of milk and recalled that it had said that it was for babies with sensitive tummies. So I sent him out to buy me a tub and we have been using nothing else since.
