An FM tuner that still sounds great Advantages: Size, ease of use, looks Disadvantages: No AM? The Quad FM4 is a tuner, as you might have realised. It is an FM only tuner, and is part of the Quad series '4'. It is a high quality tuner usually used in conjunction with the Quad 34 preamp and 405 power amp, although it can be used with any amplifier. The FM4 first appeared in the late 70s. Quite a long time ago. It remained in production until around 1996. It's therefore no longer available to buy new. When first released, it quickly gained ... ...my only tuner. As Quad would say, the tuner is only as good as the signal it receives. So a good FM aerial is recommended. Although an indoor ribbon type aerial is fine if the signal is strong, I would think. If you believe that FM radio still offers the best sound quality, then a decent FM tuner will make the most of it. Given a good signal, the FM4 does that. It 's a gloriously rich sound. Micromega Minium FM Tuner Advantages: Superb sound quality and very simple to use Disadvantages: None On the recommendation of a HiFi dealer, I purchased this Tuner. He informed me that the essential electronics used were the same as those used in a £1000 tuner hence giving the same sound quaity. When I took it home and turned it on, I was not disappointed. I use it with an Audiolab 8000 pre and power amp and a pair of Proac Studio Mk1 speakers. Musical Fidelity A5 DAB & FM tuner Advantages: Superb sound given a quality transmission. Matches A5 amp & CD Disadvantages: A bulky case compared to most other tuners Prior to purchasing the Musical Fidelity A5 tuner I was using a Audiolab 8000T which is considered to be an exceptionally fine sounding FM tuner. After reading that the sound quality of DAB was nothing to write home about I was really surprised to find thet A5 on DAB easily matched the 8000T on sound quality when listening to radio 3 and classic FM. In fact, I think it actually better it in terms of stereo image and focus. For me, the A5 proves that ... ...sound as good as FM. Unfortunately a lot of the DAB only stationes seem to be broadcast in lower quality so limiting the potential of the A5. That said if you want to listen to DAB only stations there is no better way than the A5. It's pretty good on FM as well. ... Tivoli model one Advantages: Excellent sound and ease of tuning Disadvantages: No DAB or longwave Dont let the looks deceive you,this radio is fantastic. The sound quality is outstanding and will fill most rooms with an unbelievable quality of sound. The tuning mechanism is a delight with a geared control knob which allows accurate tuning with the aid of a magic eye tuning indicator. DABtastic Advantages: Cheap DAB upgrade Disadvantages: Not everyone can get a signal ...seperately. A few pounds normally. Matsui recommend acquiring the lead from partsmaster (0870 600 1338) but it would be cheaper elsewhere. It will attached to any audio product that has an auxillary input such as hi-fi systems, DVD home theatre systems and CD cassette players. It is well packaged in a box that contains the unit and a remote control. As is usually the case the remote control requires batteries which are not included. It takes 2 ... ...the device where you want it and plug in the leads to the hi-fi and also the power lead which is via an adapter. Position the aerial which is a long wire to pick up the best signal. I find straight up is best in my locality, i secured it to the wall using sticky tape and this picks up a good signal this way. Turn on the power then use the remote control to search for the stations available in your particular area.
