Going for a song... Advantages: AWESOME reception and sound, superb construction, attractive finish,easy to use Disadvantages: DISCONTINUED,No DAB signal or Kbs strength indicator (see review) ...long been a fan of Sony products especially their HiFi Seperates of which I own several (see my other reviews) but back in September 2007 I stumbled across the Sony ST-D777ES tuner in the Solihull Sony Centre at an incredible price. Being interested in Hifi for a while, I was aware of the the Sony ES range (Extraordinary Standard-Sony's premium Hifi and AV products) and owning this particular model had been a dream. Now I'd acquired a Sony DAB tuner ... ...chance visit into the Solihull Sony Centre revealed a dusty,folorn Sony ST-D777ES tuner for the princely sum of....£99.97. £99.97??!!! For a tuner which should be costing £700? Brought My Radio Experience out of the Dark Ages Advantages: Fantastic sound both on DAB and FM wavebands, clear instuctions, competitive price, comprehensive remote. Disadvantages: Unless you live very close to a transmitter it will require an ariel (see review) yet another discontinued Sony Hifi item (see review) ...months ago, I reviewd two Sony HiFi seperates items which I'd used to comprehensivly upgrede my HiFi system. I'd missed out the quite fantastic DAB tuner but this is now to be rectified. I'd acquired a portable Sony XDR-S1 DAB radio some time ago and had been delighted with it. However, I'd decided to acquire a proper Hifi system shortly afterwards and realised that a portable radio didn't exactly fit the role. Back in those days I had a mixture ... ...I was swaying towards the Sony option. It had received rave reviews and at £250 RRP offered a nice saving over the Denon model. So off to the Hifi dealers to see them in the flesh. I visited Sevenoaks HiFi in Wolverhampton who leaned towards towards the Denon but felt this had more to do with the fact they didn't stock Sony but at least I could see it and listen to it. Nice tuner, I like it! Advantages: Nice looking and easy to use Disadvantages: No remote or DAB ...headphone socket like most other Sony components. This isn't really a problem though if your amp does everything you need. Nor does it come with a remote control, so unfortunately you will have to get up each time you want to change station! It comes with 2 small aerials, one for AM and one for FM. These are pretty rubbish though as can be expected, so to take full advantage you should have a proper aerial installed on your roof somewhere. Tivoli model one Advantages: Excellent sound and ease of tuning Disadvantages: No DAB or longwave Dont let the looks deceive you,this radio is fantastic. The sound quality is outstanding and will fill most rooms with an unbelievable quality of sound. The tuning mechanism is a delight with a geared control knob which allows accurate tuning with the aid of a magic eye tuning indicator. The use of real wood cabinet enhances the look with a bass port at the rear. DABtastic Advantages: Cheap DAB upgrade Disadvantages: Not everyone can get a signal ...seperately. A few pounds normally. Matsui recommend acquiring the lead from partsmaster (0870 600 1338) but it would be cheaper elsewhere. It will attached to any audio product that has an auxillary input such as hi-fi systems, DVD home theatre systems and CD cassette players. It is well packaged in a box that contains the unit and a remote control. As is usually the case the remote control requires batteries which are not included. It takes 2 ... ...the device where you want it and plug in the leads to the hi-fi and also the power lead which is via an adapter. Position the aerial which is a long wire to pick up the best signal. I find straight up is best in my locality, i secured it to the wall using sticky tape and this picks up a good signal this way. Turn on the power then use the remote control to search for the stations available in your particular area.
