Turnips are not difficult to grow . Slugs are the biggest problem particularly in wet summers ( is there any other kind ? ) amd on heavy soil . Ideally , well drained fertile soil is best . Water well in dry weather as they can become tough and stringy if allowed to go without water at the root for any length of time . The best variety to grow in my opinion is Golden Ball . This is a good all rounder and reliable too . Harvest the crop whilst it is still relatively small certainly no bigger than the size of a tennis ball . This way the flavour is better and their is less time for the slugs to do their worst . Well worth the effort overall .
