Pro-ject Pro-tection!

Advantages: Good turntable, now replaced so deals available?
Disadvantages: A little tricky to change the cartridge

...handled by an experienced dealer. Project has one of the largest dealer networks in the UK and is very well represented throughout mainland Europe and even the rest of the World. Indeed their products are some of the most modern in the turntable world, designed in Austria and built in a very modern plant in the Czech Republic. The RPM9 was top of the range until relatively recently when the range became even deeper, everything went to Mk ii or even ...
...and at what price point. Project turntables are all unsuspended - this means that the turntable has no springs/suspension to isolate it from its surroundings. This need not be an issue but you will have to take into account what you put the turntable down on. It will affect the eventual sound considerably. A purpose built Hi-Fi rack or stand is essential (no I don't work for the manufacturers of them!) if you want to get the most out of a good turntable ...

...of poor build quality. This project turntable on the other hand has a solid wooden base, unlike other cheaper plastic ones which are less sturdy. It has excellent sound quality and sounds near cd quality. You can also improve this by purchasing a better quality cartridge, however for people new to turntables it is more than adequate. In terms of looks it is one of the more of the better looking turntables and fits neatly on top of my amp. Initially ...
...is easy if you follow the instructions. It has two speeds, 33rpm and 45rmp. This is where the slight downside of the turntable appears, because in order to change the speed you need to take the plate off and put the belt around a different circle using a small plastic tool. However, although this may seem complicated, it is not and only takes about ten seconds. To conclude, this is a stylish turntable with good sound quality and is suitable for ...

worthwhile step up from Project debut

Advantages: Good sonics for the price
Disadvantages: Tricky to set up at first, build a little lightweight

This is now a discontinued model by Pro-ject and can be bought inexpensively for about £60-70. I have rated this as average as there are better bargains to be had at this price but still represents good value for money. It is a basic audiophile deck and speed is switched by removing the platter and transfering the drive belt to a smaller or larger drive pully. The Deck has 33/45 rpm but no 78 setting. The stylus is an Ortofon which I didnt change ...
...to this deck. It uses an MM (moving magnet) to generate the sound which is a higher output level than moving coil (MC) but lower quality reproduction. I owned the 0.5 from new (1999) and dem'ed a Debut 1 at the same time. The Debut was £99 and the 0.5 was £179. After listening to the 0.5 after the Debut, I realised that the additional £80 was worth it because of the vastly improved detail (the 0.5 sounded much louder!). I put this down to a better ...

Not for DJing!

Advantages: High quality sound. Anti-skating and tonearm weight preadjusted so no expertise needed.
Disadvantages: Not for DJing

...not designed for that. The Technics SL-BD22 provides audiophile quality record playback for an extremely low price. I have used a lot of record players in the past and the quality of playback this provides is equivalent to other players that have cost £500+. It does feature a pitch control, like most DJ equipment, which may have caused the confusion, but this is meant for fine adjustments only, for example to correct the speed of a poorly mastered ...
