I have been a big fan of Sophie Kinsella for many years now, having first discovered her Shopaholic series and her stand alone books Can You Keep A Secret, Remember Me?, and The Undomestic Goddess. Kinsella has clearly conquered the chick-lit world and remains one of my favourite authors, but I find her stand alone books a bit hit and miss - although I enjoyed Can You Keep A Secret even more than the Shopaholic series, I found Remember Me and The Undomestic Goddess rather disappointing. That said, it was always a given when her new book, Twenties Girl, was released that I would be eager to read it.
When Lara Lington finds out her 105 year old Great Aunt Sadie has died it's the least of her worries - having recently been inexplicably dumped by her boyfriend Josh, and having just set up her own headhunting business with school friend and professional headhunter Natasha, only for Natasha to go swanning off to Goa with no sign of return, leaving Lara desperately trying to hold the business together, she has more than enough to worry about. But when Lara finds herself being haunted by Great Aunt Sadie, reinvented as her 23 year old self and determined to track down her favourite dragonfly necklace, she finds her life turned upside down as she tries to find the necklace. But who would have taken the necklace and why? Sadie is not your typical 'old lady' and her attempts to live vicariously through Lara see Lara behaving in ways she would never have considered - asking out strangers, dressing in 1920's flapper dresses, and dancing the Charleston to name but a few, as well as desperately trying to win back ex boyfriend Jason.
As always, Kinsella's writing is easy to read, fresh, engaging and full of humour. Initially I found the character of Lara a little dull and lacking in humour compared to some of Kinsella's other characters - if I'm entirely honest, I don't think she's ever quite replicated the magic of Becky Bloomwood - but as the story moved on I found the interaction with Sadie made her more interesting and I really warmed to her and was rooting for her. The story initially was a little slow to get off the mark with what seemed to be a pointless diversion around a false murder accusation that served as little more than a blatant plot device. Sadie was an interesting character with her seemingly unreasonable demands and very direct manner and the story definitely livened up once she appeared on the scene. In terms of the male talent, I found the love interest, Ed, a little bland here - normally Kinsella's men are quite similar and I have to say very attractive! It's generally your typical rich, hard working, successful man who's worked his way up and puts on a sleek, slightly arrogant business front but underneath it all is a lovely down to earth guy - typical stuff, but if you find a winning formula, stick with it I say! Unfortunately I just found the love interest here a little bit lacking in interest and charisma. Ditto really for Lara's parents - unlike Becky Bloomwood's hilariously middle class Mum and Dad, Lara's were just a little run of the mill. I did enjoy her sleazy self made coffee chain millionaire Uncle Bill and It-girl cousin Diamante though which added a touch of glamour and had you rooting for him to get his comeuppance.
In terms of plot, I have to admit that I found it a little predictable (I could tell exactly where the story was heading and a lot of Kinsella's stand alone books do tend to follow a typical formula) but was entertaining nonetheless and I read the story pretty much in one go, only stopping to grab a night's sleep. I don't think anyone's really reading chick-lit to be surprised by the ending! In the inevitable comparison with Kinsella's other books this one holds up well - I enjoyed it more than Remember Me, and although I wouldn't rank it up there with the Shopaholic series and Can You Keep A Secret, it's still a must read for chick lit fans and a really enjoyable read.
Advantages: readable, great characters, excellent storyline Disadvantages: a slow start
Okay, so anyone who reads my reviews on any sort of semi-regular basis will know that I am a massive chick-lit fan . . . and that Sophie Kinsella is one of my favourite authors in this genre. Normally I would probably rush out and buy one of her books the second it hit the bookshelf but something made me hesitate this time. Why? It wasn't the fact it was only available in hardback, that never stops me when it comes to my favourite authors. It was ... ..."into" ghost ories of any kind, so I didn't really see how this could possibly be interesting for me. But eventually curiosity got the best of me and my hovering finger finally clicked the mouse on the purchase button on Amazon. Lara is the heroine this time, a stressed-out twenty-something with an ex-boyfriend she desperately wants back and a start-up business that is rapidly going down the tubes due to her business partner (the one who had the ...

If I'm honest , at first I found it hard to get into the book. I had loved Sophie Kinsella's books , and so after reading a couple of chapters I thought 'can't see myself finishing this book' , but decided to continue just in case it got better ; which to my delight it did , and at that a LOT better! I was hooked! It kept me entertained for a few hours! I'd read it all within two nights! The ...

TwentiesGirl ? SophieKinsella.......
Laura Linington's life is all the place when the news breaks of her great aunt Sadie's death. Laura's boyfriend, Josh, has made, what Laura thinks to be, a massive error in breaking off their two year relationship and her new working partnership with her best friend in a head hunting business is up in the air as her best friend has met a new man on holiday in Goa and doesn't appear to be returning any time soon. So when the ghost of her dead 105 year old great aunt appears at the funeral in the form of her in the 1920's Laura immediately puts it down to stress.
It seems however that Laura cannot shake off this stress as the ghost of Sadie Lancaster bullies her into stopping the funeral under suspicious death allegations. Laura's great aunt wants to find a necklace that belonged to her ...
Advantages: Fantastic read that had me absorbed Disadvantages: Only when I ran out of pages!
Now I don't normally write reviews on books so bare with me!
I am a big fan of SophieKinsella, especially her creation of Becky Bloomwood and the Shopaholic books. I read most of the shopaholic series first so when her book Can You Keep A Secret? came out in between the shopaholic titles I was really looking forward to reading it. I was quite disappointed though and simply couldn't get into it. When Kinsella wrote other books that didn't feature my favourite spending queen Becky I was wary of wanting to read them, fearing I would be disappointed again (Remember Me? and The Undomestic Goddess)..I wasn't - and thoroughly enjoyed both books, so when I read that there was a new book out by Kinsella I was eager to read it.
Now having first read a few reviews about it it really didn't seem like my kind of book at all.
It was a ghost story ...
Advantages: An awesome book, a really good read and one I would really recommend Disadvantages: It's slow to get off the ground
Prepared to be shocked. I wasn't prepared to write too much for this review, I thought simple and to the point would be a lot more helpful when it came to this particular book. It's short and hopefully sweet. Enjoy.
After reading pretty much everything that SophieKinsella has written now, when she released her latest book I really wanted to read it, but a busy summer and lack of funds meant I didn?t get to read it until 2 months after its release and in the end got it from the library.
Looking at this hard back cover book with 400+ pages, I was a little sceptical if I was going to enjoy it or not, this was down to the plot, which seemed a little out there, and the one reason I liked SophieKinsella in the past, as she allows the audience to relate to the characters, how can you relate to someone who is talking to her great aunt ...
