OCR 21st century science A

Firstly, this book will help you pass the core science, however it is important for me to tell you that this book is written for the specification that will be expiring the year. Therefore this book is no use to any student who is enrolling to do the science GCSE this year. This book was designed and written for people who are currently in year 11 doing the last exams of this specification!

Content

This topic covers all 9 topics that are relevant with this GCSE. The 6 sections are:
1. B1-You and your genes
2. C1-Air quality
3. P1-The earth in the universe
4. B2-Keeping healthy
5. C2-Material choices
6. P2-Radiation and life
7. B3-Life on earth
8. C3-Food matters
9. P3-Radioactive Materials
These 9 topics are essential and will arise in the GCSE exam. This revision book is much better when compared to the other CGP revision books and BBC revision content. The reason for me saying this is that each topic is covered in extreme detailed, around 30 pages per topic. This is very detailed as the CGP book consists of 30 pages which cover 3 topics rather than 1.The revision guide has many images which are very useful for teenagers as they enjoy visually aided learning. Furthermore the guide describes the key information step-by-step so it is easy to remember and learn. Once you have read a double page there are challenging questions that will help you understand whether or not you fully understand the topic that is being revised.

Layout

The first pages are used for the content. Thereafter there is an introduction to the course explaining where and how you will cover the 100% of the GCSE. When starting each topic there will be a double page with images related to the topic. Then when the actual revision pages begin there is a green box in the top left describes what the reader should find out about. At the bottom of each page there are key words which have been covered in the topic. This is very useful as it allows the user to understand which key words he/she should understand as they may arise in the exam. There are many pictures and challenging question on each page. Once the reader has finished each topic he will encounter a summary page, explaining what the users should know. Within the end pages there is a glossary consisting of all keywords with descriptions of what they mean. I believe this is very useful as if the reader is confused, they can look here and they will understand what the word or process means.

The book is very easy to use, this is because all the information you need to know is in the order to what your teachers teach you. The key terminology is quite hard to get around but this book makes it easy to understand what is means due to the glossary and the description on the page. If you need to know something you can either turn to the index or contents to find the page you want, this is very easy to do.

Price and information

This book can be brought from various places; these prices have dropped dramatically as this is the last year where they will be used:
Amazon-19 including prime delivery
Zavvi-5.80
Bookdepository-3.91
General information:
Exam Board: OCR
Course: OCR Twenty First Century Science A
Number of Pages: 272
Price: 4.50 (Although I got it through school for about 3)

My opinion

This book is extremely capable of provide students with enough information to get an A*/A. The book is slightly interesting but it is revision so it can never be fun! If I have a choice I wouldn't read this book again. It is extremely useful and does exactly what the book says and is a "revision guide".

Review summary

for the review "A great revision guide cable of providing the knowledge to get an A*"
A great revision book for people who are studying GCSE 21st century science this year (2011) thereafter this book will be useless as the specification would have changed dramatically.
