Twinings as we all know is a very reputable tea company and their products are of high quality and I have never personally been disappointed with them!
I love this tea and definitely recommend it both from the taste point of view and for its health benefits, I cannot say that since drinking this I am more of a healthy person, I suppose it is the whole lifestile that makes the difference, but if ... more
Have to admit that although some people find weekend shopping trips an awful and dreaded experience, I absolutely love inspecting new products on the shelves of my local Tesco store "Got to try this" I tell myself! So this is how I discovered this new tea… I am a bit of a health conscious freak and as soon as studies, researches or anyone says "Buy this product, it is full of nutrients, its properties are good for you" I am such a sucker and can't resist the temptation…
In all honesty until I found this I did not know white tea existed, I thought it was another "invention" to keep people buying.. After red tea, green tea, now white tea… what is next: purple tea?? Anyway I tried this product and was pleasantly surprised and reccomended it to my friends and they have started buying this too.
PACKAGING ********** More than anything I was fascinated by how different the packaging of this product looked from all the other Twinings teas, most of their teas are in black boxes, apart from the coloured ones for fruity teas and the green ones for the green teas, but this specific product was in a stricking white box with a catching picture of an opened pomegranate fruit..it looked so luxurious, posh, I could not resist it! The box is made of carton and inside you will find 20 teabags which are individually wrapped in a paperbag sporting the same colour and picture of the main box. The reason of the over packaged product is simply to preserve its taste and properties for longer. All this wrapping can be recycled so at the end nothing goes wasted. The whole box is in itself sealed in a clear plastic wrapping paper for better handling.
HOW DOES IT TASTE? ********** White tea has a very delicate taste it is mainly made of young tea leaves and the process it goes under avoids oxidation which happens with other types of tea. If you do like strong tea or are keep on green tea this might not be "your cup of tea" (had to use the pun!). The colour of this is a light golden yellow and to me the smell is absolutely gorgeous.. The pomegranate gives it a hint of fruitiness but it is not in any way overpowering it really blends well, it could be compared to a forest fruit without the tanginess or citrusy aftertaste. The tea is very easy to drink, soft to the palate possibly best drunk after lunch or in the afternoon, if you need a kick to wake you up it might not be ideal but don't let it fool you as it does contain a good amount of caffeine, some say even more than green tea!
BREWING INSTRUCTIONS ********** Because of the fact it is made of young leaves they suggest to bring to the boil some fresh water, let it rest for a bit and then pour it on the tea bag inside a mug or teapot (one tea bag per person). This proedure would prevent the young leaves to be burned by boiling water. Let it brew for only a minute, take away the tea bag add some sugar or honey if you prefer and enjoy. In my opinion this blend is best enjoyed with no sugar at all, if you give it a go you will notice that the taste is not in any way bitter but naturally sweet. If you let it overbrew (and this is what happens with green tea and why people hate it) than the taste changes, remember that green tea and white tea are not like ordinary tea, the longer you let them brew the more you spoil their taste. Last but not least this tea does not go well with milk so do not put any in it.
WHAT IS ALL THE FUSS ABOUT? ********** In the last year or so we have seen how pomegranate has slowly made its way through juices, smoothies and fruit shelves. Apparently they have discovered that this ruby fruit is rich in vitamin C and andioxidants which help our body prevent cell damage and therefore in a way premature ageing. Combined to this white tea which is said to be healthier than other types as it is the least processed and has anticancer properties I suppose sends a message that this product is totally good for you and perhaps swapping one cup of your normal tea with this can only be good for you. I believe that the fact it contains essence of fruit and not an actual whole pomegranate will not help you towards your "One a day" so make sure you do not cheat on this one! :-)
COST ********** This product costs £1.99 which means that each tea bag is around 10p. It can be of course more expensive compared to other versions of ordinary tea but if you drink this once in a while or for a cup a day it will certainly last you a while.
MY OPINION ********** This tea is absolutely gorgeous but I noticed it is not very easy to find, big stores usually stock it but don't expect your local Tesco Metro to have this. I am sure it can be ordered on www.twinings.co.uk but expect to pay a couple of pounds for delivery so it is worth placing a big order. I have ordered from them a few times in the past and their service is pretty good. It usually takes no more than two days to receive their parcel and their packaging is impeccable. Twinings as we all know is a very reputable tea company and their products are of high quality and I have never personally been disappointed with them!
I love this tea and definitely recommend it both from the taste point of view and for its health benefits, I cannot say that since drinking this I am more of a healthy person, I suppose it is the whole lifestile that makes the difference, but if you are conscious about what you eat or drink by purchasing this you are certainly not heading towards the wrong direction!
Advantages: Healthy, natural, tastes better than green tea, and low in calories Disadvantages: Somewhat expensive, almost bland, and not caffeine free
Twinings White Tea and Pomegranate (20 teabags) It is true that I wrote more than one review about those healthy drinks yet I'm not a health nut; I just wanted to drink something light after eating a magnificent pepperoni pizza and I found this one. I was enthusiastic about Twinings White Tea and Pomegranate because I heard about white tea but never tried it before and also because I thought the pomegranate flavouring would help in case the tea tasted ... ...as some people told me they hated green tea, and so I guess this lighter alternative, which is not really bitter by the way, is the one for them, but not exactly for me.
The tea I'm reviewing comes in a nice white box with a drawing of tea leaves and half a pomegranate on it. It contains 20 teabags and they are individually wrapped. I bought mine from The Cooperative for £1.89 which is not cheap (you can buy it from Tesco for a tiny bit less), but ...
