Walkie talkies? Two way radio?
Advantages: free and easy to contact other family members Disadvantages: short range in built up areas
This two way radios are ideal for use to communicate to other family members, in a close proximatey. These radios have 8 channels which allow two way voice conversations. These do not require licenses to use and are free to run, apart from batteries. They generally have a 3km range in an open area, but in a built up area can range from 1km-3km. These are ideal to give to children if you just don't think it's time for them to have a real mobile phone. ...

Binatone MR600 Twin Review
Advantages: Lots of channels to talk to lots of people with similar radios. Disadvantages: The weather can reduce the reception.
These radios can be used for work, sport, play and sercurity. They have a farely good range of up to 3km, but this can drop if there are buildings in the way or the weather is bad. The features, ringtones and VOX technology are good, and they come with a free battery re-charger and hands free kits. I mainly use these for play and i've noticed that not only can you buy more twin packs, you can also buy different radios that will work together, which ... ...keypad, adjust the volume and change lots of settings. The hands free kits plug straight in and all you have to do is turn on VOX, which will activate the PTP (press to talk) button as soon as it detects noise. You can change how loud this noise has to be to work. It also features a stopwatch, though not a clock, which can be annoying. And you can scan to see who is on other channels. Turning on or off, or changing these settings is easy. Overall ...

Makes life easier!
Advantages: Easy to use, very clear Disadvantages: quite expensive
These things are genius. Like all new parents we wanted something to monitor our baby when we had put them down to sleep and to be confident that they were ok. This is it. The signal is wonderfully strong giving very clear sound reproduction of what your baby is up to. we can hear the slightest squeak out of him! you can also change the volume sensitivity if you only want to hear a cry and not just the squeaking! The temperature in the room where ... ...and the monitor. You can tell the transmitter to play music from the monitor and can even hook your ipod up to it to play babies favourite tunes. The monitor also allows you to record a message of your voice. You can also talk betwene the monitor and the transmitter, and the monitor also features a torch. The Monitor charges off the mains and lasts about 10 hours between charges. Absolutely great and it does not interfere with other wireless devices ...

Great for outdoor activities
Advantages: Easy to use, inexpensive, very useful, great for emergencies Disadvantages: Better battery life would be welcome, as would improved range in hilly environments
I just spent a week using Talkr T5s whilst on a skiing holiday in France. They were used to stay in contact with my friends on the mountain, and also carried in case of emergency. Handset range is very much dependant on conditions. Whilst the 6km maximum range can be achived, in practice this was often greatly less if there is something large between the transmitter and reciever. Typically reception was good if my friends were on the same side of ... ...valley then we got no reception at all. The sub-channel system works well, and means that you have much more chance of finding a channel that no-one else is using. We used channel 7-13, which meant that we could only hear channel 7-13, and only people using either 7-13 or the whole 7 channel could listen in. Broadcast quality varies, but is roughly landline phone quality assuming that you are "in range".
The handsets are easy to use, especially ...

My favourite Baby Monitor
Advantages: Charger Cradle, Digital, good range, long lasting, dead simple to use, clear sound Disadvantages: none for me
When our boy was on his way, daddy had all the fun to look into gadgets for the new era in our life. Now having had an experience with the widely used and available Tomy Baby Monitors I was absolutely sure that I do not want one of those as when being with friends who are using one of these I felt Darth Vader nearby because of all the interference radio noises. After having done some sufficient research I settled with this beautiful machine from ... ...and better ones) and easy to order for around 45 quid from Amazon. I myself bought it for 20 quid used on Ebay and it has now already the fourth child on it. There is not much to discuss about baby monitors as they are supposed to fulfil a very specific task. If you need a camera and/or temperature sensor or any other, for my own use unnecessary, upgrade than look no further. If you are looking for a really good simple Baby Monitor please read about ...
