Speed: 6 out of 10---The scanner’s speed is quite slow, but if you are only going to use it for general things, this shouldn’t be a problem.
Colour Sensitivity: 7 out of 10--- Colour sensitivity is good for the scanner; it produces some quality scans of paper with many different colours on them.

The UMAX AstraSlim 1200 SE is quite a fashionable scanner, which can be brought on a budget for around £35. I decided to buy one when I found out or suddenly became aware of how useful owning a scanner is. But, as usual, I was on a budget, and gave myself the task of buying a scanner which, is not only inexpensive but also is of good quality . After looking through the catalogues, I stumbled across this scanner. The package looked good and it was relatively cheap for a scanner so I brought it. It was money well spent. The scanner has plenty of functions and it does exactly what I wanted it to do!
Features:
-No power supply needed, connects through USB cable -Photo-copy option -Direct Scan option -Direct e-mail option -OCR function -Photo express CD
A little information on the UMAX then:
Speed: 6 out of 10---The scanner’s speed is quite slow, but if you are only going to use it for general things, this shouldn’t be a problem.
Colour Sensitivity: 7 out of 10--- Colour sensitivity is good for the scanner; it produces some quality scans of paper with many different colours on them.
Resolution: 7 out of 10--- The resolution of the scanner is of a good standard, and again it is O.K for general things, but sometimes, it makes things look a tiny bit darker than what they really are, but its hardly noticeable.
Ease of use/installation: 10 out of 10--- The installation of the scanner is quick and easy and when using the scanner to do something, you only have to press a certain button located on the front of the scanner.
Design: 9 out of 10----In my opinion the design looks good and is something different, and it stands out, but in some cases, this could be a problem, as its colours could make the scanner look silly, or the equipment surrounding it look silly. The colour of it is a Dark blue top and a Dark grey bottom, but it does look nice.
Range of Features/Functions: 8 out of 10--- The scanners functions and features are just enough for me as I only use it for small things, but if the scanner is to be used for loads of different applications, the selection of Functions and Features may not be enough.
Instruction manual and manufacturer support: 10 out of 10--- Although I had never heard of this company before, the manufacturer support is very good, and the instructions are easy to understand and friendly.
Value for money: 9 out of 10---The UMAX AstraSlim 1200 SE was a good buy, and for all the features and the quality of the scans, I think its excellent value for money.
In summary, if you need a good looking scanner for general scans and small applications and wouldn’t mind some excellent CD equipment all in the mixture, as well as a sensible price, this Scanner is the right choice.
Advantages: reliable, durable and cheap Disadvantages: Hand-writing recognition not that great.
...and finally decided on the UMAX Astraslim SE.
At first I did not expect much from this scanner as it was less than £40 to buy but I must admit I was pleasantly surprised to find it was such a good investment. Along with it's scanning capabilities this piece of hardware also comes with a photocopier (direct image to printer), e-mail function which allows you to avoid the hassle of saving to the hard-drive in the correct format then having to find ... ...also comes with a handwriting recognition option and some limited recognition software. (textbridge and ABBYY)
Other software included with the scanner is the Ulead photo express suite. This is a trial version but it has no time limit on it. It offers all of the basic features which are on the full version and it is actually quite good. Using this software you can edit photos with ease by cropping, rotating, changing the contrast and the brightness ...

The AstraSlim 1200 SE is another CIS flatbed scanner, the big brother of the AstraSlim SE, but it has extra high resolution of 1200 x 2400dpi, but also 48 Bit, USB 1.1 interface and a very compact construction due to Compact Image Sensors (CIS). The AstraSlim 1200 SE offers 4 scan buttons for comfortable working. With only 2 kg and very slim dimensions of 4, 2 cm x 42 cm x 27, 6 cm the AstraSlim 1200 SE is a mobile lightweight. There is no power adapter and inconvenient power cable, the power is supplied through the USB interface. With the scan buttons (E-Mail, OCR, Copy, Scan) you can scan the originals directly to an application. This is timesaving and convenient, especially for beginners. The AstraSlim 1200 SE driver is compatible to Windows 98, Me, 2000 and XP. Included in the software there is Photo Express 3.0 SE for image editing, Textbridge Classic and ABBYY FineReader Sprint for optical character recognition (OCR). The AstraSlim 1200 SE is the ideal scanner for those who need to scan in high resolution and prefer good design. 1200 x 2400 dpi resolution, 42 Bit color depth, USB interface and 4 scan buttons make this scanner a comfortable tool for digital image editing.
