Looking for a cheap scanner, I happened upon this beauty in jungle? why beauty? well it only cost me £60 INCLUDING the transparency adaptor. and it includes a scsi port [a DB25 type, ie looks like parallel] as well as the more conventional USB type. It has the usualscsi pass through, scsi id etc. The buttons [to-program, copy, user-defined] on the scanner are useful, and it isn't *too* tricky to change what program it uses in the TWAIN drivers - it defaults to the included page something or other - not the adobe one oc! - which is fine for beginners, a pain for anyone else. Looking for a cheap scanner, I happened upon this beauty in jungle? why beauty? well it only cost me £60 INCLUDING the transparency adaptor. and it includes a scsi port [a DB25 type, ie looks like parallel] as well as the more conventional USB type. This is a brilliant idea, although they only provide the cheaper USB cable [and it's quite short at that] It is reasonably quick through USB, not stunning but then I wouldn't expect so for this price. Through scsi however, it was about DOUBLE the speed. I was mightily impressed. Speaking of the TWAIN drivers, they aren't too bad as it happens. the basic will get you up and scanning quickly, while the advanced isn't a complete nightmare, still having presets for different filters [ie newsprint, photos etc] for example. They also include OCR software, it's ok, it works, although i do recommend textbridge pro for any serious editing, which on upgrade is quite cheap.
The only downside i have of it is that it, for the time being, doesn't have SCSI drivers for win2k. a shame, as this is the real strength of the scanner. All in all, an exceedingly good buy!
Advantages: cheap, reliable Disadvantages: not the best software
...The solution is this Umax scanner. I have to say Umax have improved quality wise no end over the last year or so and returns rates are incredibly minimal compared to their 610P model of a few years back. PLus you have the added bonus off an adaptor to scan thise slides. All this for around £150-£175 all in. The software isn't the best in the world but for the money you save you could get better software. A little known fact is that Umax make scanners ...

Advantages: Rather compact, excellent price, scanning positive image is very well Disadvantages: Poor software, problems with USB, scanning of color negatives is bad
and direct copying on the printer.
Connection of the scanner and installation of the software have not call any difficulties. The scanner works with little noise level, the process of scanning is accompanied by small vibration. The power supply unit in operating time is appreciable heated up.
When work with transparent originals on a plane table to put a special framework. The sizes of area of scanning in this mode allow to place rather large originals, for example slides by a size 9x12 sm. Unfortunately, the absence of special inserts hinders work with a 35-mm film.
In a counterbalance to the software of performance of the hardware UmaxAstra 3450 have appeared much better on a comparison with the 2200 model. The scanner shown the excellent output results and good productivity. It is necessary to mark a high exactitude colors and balance ...

The UMAX Astra 2200 is the smart, push button scanner for home and office. With a touch of a button you can scan, copy or send images and documents to popular applications such as e-mail, document management and image editing software. With the USB interface, setup is simple. Just plug in the scanner, install the software and you're up and running in minutes. And the 2200 also has a SCSI II interface, which means that more computer systems new and old will be able to easily connect to the scanner. With the included Universal Transparency Cover, you can easily scan slides, negatives and other transparent material. The Transparency Cover replaces the lid on your scanner and allows you to scan transparencies up to 4" x 5".
