I've mainly not had any problems except sometimes the scanner isn't fully recognised as I use it on a hub built into my monitor. When I switch on my monitor is complains that I've unplugged it improperly. This doesn't seem to affect the usage of the scanner however.
*** Software ***
There isn’t a huge amount of bundled software. You get:
Ulead Photo Express SE – Allows you to scan and edit images. TWAIN interface software – For basic scanning duties. ReadIris - OCR software. Adobe Acrobat Reader
As the scanner is TWAIN compatible you can use it with most image editing programs such as Photoshop and PaintshopPro.
*** Image Quality ***
Colour depth: 48bit Max scanning area: 216 x 297 mm. Optical resolution: 600 dpi x 1200 dpi Interpolated resolution: 9600 dpi x 9600 dpi Scan mode: Single Pass
Photoshop is what I mainly use the scanner with. I’ve always had good results from scanning photos, sketches and books. I’ve sometimes had to sort out the colour levels in Photoshop but usually only when scanning something bulky when I’ve not been able to keep the cover completely down.
Advantages: Good looks, nice price Disadvantages: A bit slow
The UMAXAstraSlim 1200 SE is quite a fashionable scanner, which can be brought on a budget for around £35. I decided to buy one when I found out or suddenly became aware of how useful owning a scanner is. But, as usual, I was on a budget, and gave myself the task of buying a scanner which, is not only inexpensive but also is of good quality . After looking through the catalogues, I stumbled across this scanner. The package looked good and it was relatively cheap for a scanner so I brought it. It was money well spent. The scanner has plenty of functions and it does exactly what I wanted it to do!
Features:
-No power supply needed, connects through USB cable
-Photo-copy option
-Direct Scan option
-Direct e-mail option
-OCR function
-Photo express CD
A little information on the UMAX then:

Advantages: reliable, durable and cheap Disadvantages: Hand-writing recognition not that great.
About a year ago I figured I wanted to buy a scanner as it would be handy to have for college work. As I am a student I am on a rather tight budget and finally decided on the UMAX Astraslim SE.
At first I did not expect much from this scanner as it was less than £40 to buy but I must admit I was pleasantly surprised to find it was such a good investment.
Along with it's scanning capabilities this piece of hardware also comes with a photocopier (direct image to printer), e-mail function which allows you to avoid the hassle of saving to the hard-drive in the correct format then having to find the file again before you can send it. The scanner also comes with a handwriting recognition option and some limited recognition software. (textbridge and ABBYY)
Other software included with the scanner is the Ulead photo express suite. This ...
Umax presents the AstraSlim, its first CIS scanner. Instead of the normal CCD array this scanner uses Contact Image Sensors (CIS), which allow for very compact construction of flatbed scanner. The AstraSlim can be stowed away easily into a notebook carry case or a desk drawer. The dark blue up cover and the dark gray chassis result in a stunning product that stands out against most other IT-peripherals.Furthermore the AstraSlim is USB-powered. The scanner instead of needing an external power supply draws its power directly from the USB port, meaning no heavy adapters are required and fewer cables. AstraSlim is provided with an easy-to-use software package. Push the scan button and the Scanmanager automatically appears without having to manually start the scan driver. Scanmanager gives you the option of where the scan is sent to for, e.g. printer, e-mail, fax, file, OCR software or image editing software.
