As far as standard DVD playback goes there is nothing exceptional about this player, everything you would expect a budget DVD player to do is done no better nor worse than any other player in this price range (and some below this price range). It may seem strange but plain old DVD playback is not the important thing about this player. Nor, strangely enough, is the fact that its multi-regional out of the box...so what makes the Umax/Yamada DVX6100 special? The DVX6100's ace up the sleeve is MPEG4 compatability...
If you have any Mpeg 4 movies (DivX, Xvid etc) then this little beauty will play them as well. Normally these files will only play on your PC (assuming you have the proper codecs installed). From an easy to navigate menu system you can select the file on the CD/DVD that you want to play, press enter and 'voila' there is your movie. So the video of 'Nancy's Wedding Day' that you compressed with DivX to fit on a CD that the family used to have to crowd around the PC screen to watch, can now be displayed in all its glory in the comfort of your living room!
While we're on the subject of playing capabilities this thing has played everything I've thrown at it - and believe me I tried to catch it out! DVDs, copied DVDs, Mpeg 4, VCD, SVCD, Picture CD, CDR/W, MP3's...everything!
This IS a budget player, you can tell by the feel of it, it isn't going to win any awards in a DVD player beauty contest either...but when you factor in the extra functionality its a hands down winner!
There is a thriving support community (the best is probably www.digitalathome.co.uk) with representatives of Umax/Yamada present in the forums. New firmware upgrades that are easy to apply and usually include increased functionality are regularly released and are avaiable from Umax's website.
For £79.99 (amazon) & free delivery you really can't go wrong if you want DivX playback...and they throw in a SCART cable!
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
I would say that the DVD playback is excellent on this player, i've seen some really bad playback from some big brands in the past but this baby hasn't let me down though, the rest of the review was fairly accurate though.
