Manufacturer's product description

The Mirage II is a large format (A3 size) scanner based UMAX proprietary technology for a dual-lens design. The single-pass, 36-bit scanner increases in-house productivity by providing batch scanning and prepress capabilities intended for professional graphic designers and publishing professionals. With a large 11.4" x 17" scanning area, the Mirage II is ideal for users in reproduction houses and service bureaus who want to scan multiple images, large artwork, newspapers, magazines, aerial and satellite maps or even medical X-ray film. Based on a unique dual-lens design, Mirage II performs at resolutions of 700 x 1400 dpi and 1400 x 2800 dpi, true hardware resolution. Dual-lens technology overcomes the limitations of current charged coupled device (CCD) technology, offering a breakthrough method for increasing optical resolution. Prior to the introduction of the dual-lens design, true optical resolution for flatbed scanners was limited by the number of optic detectors contained in a CCD. This limitation makes development of high, true optical resolution in flatbed scanners difficult and expensive. By using two sets of optics that have two different magnification factors, UMAX overcomes the CCD limitation. When selecting a higher resolution with a maximum scanning area of 5.7" x 17", the optical resolution doubles to an incredible 1400 x 2800 dpi. In effect, dual-lens technology provides a cost-effective method for increasing optical resolution simply, easily and accurately. This package also includes transparency adaptor and various software products you will need every day - MagicScan, Adobe PhotoShop LE, BinuScan PhotoPerfect (RGB+CMYK).

Advantages: Simple interface. easy to set up
Disadvantages: flimsy lid

...The Umax 3400 is a good solid scanner that is excellent value for money. It is simple to set up with 1 lead connecting to the USB port on your PC and the other to the mains supply. It comes complete with software that allows you to create calendars, posters, business cards etc. It is simple to use with scanning being possible with just the touch of a button. It is possible to copy a document, scan a document to disk or to a web based destination. At £50 you won't find a better beginners scanner.... Read review

Review of UMAX Astra 2200 by utero

Advantages: cheap, reliable
Disadvantages: not the best software

...Well where I work more and more people ask about scanning their slides into their pc. Problem is the scanner they have has an optional adaptor which costs more than they payed for the scanner ! The solution is this Umax scanner. I have to say Umax have improved quality wise no end over the last year or so and returns rates are incredibly minimal compared to their 610P model of a few years back. PLus you have the added bonus off an adaptor to scan thise slides. All this for around £150-£175 all in. The software isn't the best in the world but for the money you save you could get better software. A little known fact is that Umax make scanners for some other major manufacturers, this is worth bearing in mind as those other major manufactureres are always difficult to get hold of stock wise.... Umax Astra 2000P
Review of UMAX Astra 2000P by markedwards

Advantages: good price
Disadvantages: persistent failure

...Hi I used to have a Umax Astra 2000P parallel-port flatbed scanner, but after the third one went wrong, I asked Umax's UK support provider to give me something else, because the darn thing would always go wrong when I most needed to copy a document or scan something. I don't know if this is the experience of other users, but the parallel port model was nothing but trouble from the start. The problem was always scanner connection. VSaccess used to suddenly and without warning say the scanner was undetectable and that was it. The last problem occurred during a scan - my machine hung whilst it was scanning happily, but following reboot the scanner was permanently undetectable. I now have a 2200 instead, which has worked fine (so far), but did need me to go and buy a scsi card.... Read review
