The PowerLook 1100 is the first professional Mac and PC scanner dedicated for FireWire/IEEE-1394 support. One of the fastest peripheral connection standards developed to date, FireWire/IEEE-1394 connectivity offers PowerLook 1100 users such compelling benefits as blazing data transfer rates, hot-pluggable connectivity without the need for a host card, and the ability to connect multiple Macs to streamline workflow. To create professional-quality image production, the PowerLook 1100 achieves a high 3.4Dmax for fine details, 1200 x 2400 dpi with a 10, 600 element tri-linear CCD, and an effective 42-bit output using UMAX' patented BET (Bit Enhancement Technology). Advantages: Decent quality scanner, good price, great selection of software. Disadvantages: Scanning speed is on the slow side.
...My old UMAX died on me and it was a great scanner. I decided to stay with UMAX, so i bought the Umax Astra 2000P,
because I thought the quality would be the same as my first scanner. but i was WRONG.
They added more useless bells and whistles and made the actual scanning process take twice as long, but the scans weren't any better. Also the scanner hasn't worked since the second month after I bought it. which was a long time ago now.
For some reason it is not being recognized anymore by the computer. There is nothing wrong with the computer as everything else is working just fine. The blasted scanner is the problem. Now I have to take it AND my computer back to the place where I bought the scanner and have it serviced. This is a pain. I should have never gone with UMAX again.

...No matter what model scanner you choose, you'll always make some compromises, whether it's price, speed, resolution, software, etc. With the UMAX Astra 2000P, you get a surprisingly good scanner with few compromises, at a great price.
Now, I didn't say the UMAX Astra 2000P comes without any compromises, and it's best to get that out right up front. The scanner does have one issue; its speed. Because the Astra 2000P is a parallel port scanner (hence the "P" in the model name), it's slow compared to scanners that connect to computers by other means, like a SCSI port. If you've been spoiled by fast flatbed scanners, like some of Hewlett-Packard's top of the line models, then the Astra 2000P will take some getting used to. ...Umax are generally the cheapest scanners you can get. When buying a scanner, the main features to look for and pay for is:
a) Resolution
This is not too much of a problem because if the scanner can do over 600 dpi, then its more than enough for any user, barr the Multimillion pound publisher..!
b) Price
Don't go over board. Buy the scanner tha meets your needs not your budget.. scanners are very cheap, don't boterh spending more than about £100.
c)Speed
Parralel port is the slowest with USB and SCSI being faster, but expect to pay a little more for those. If you use the scanner regularly than a scsi/usb would be a good investment, or else stick to a cheap parallel port version.
d)Features
Don't be foole by the many features. A scanner can all do similar things so don't worry too much about it.
