Manufacturer's product description
The PowerLook III is a high-resolution scanner optimized for professionals in electronic publishing, graphic arts, commercial printing, catalog design, advertising design, service bureaus, professional photography and photo labs. The PowerLook III, a part of the PowerLook family of professional quality scanners, combines 42-bit color output with Bit Enhancement Technology and a maximum optical density of up to 3.4 D max. This creates high-quality scans from images as small as 35mm slides with complete versatility for scanning multiple media formats: transparencies, slides, reflectives and negatives. The PowerLook III uses CDS (Correlated Double Sampling) technology to purify image signals and filter out low frequency noise. CDS uses built-in intelligent algorithms to sample the digital information twice rather than just once. By comparing the two samples, the algorithms can validate accuracy, one against the other, to remove errors and ensure perfect image quality. The Professional version of the scanner (PowerLook III Pro) includes MagicScan. Magicscan features include RGB, Lineart and Grayscale scanning. It also comes with Binuscan Photoperfect RGB/CMYK. Binuscan Photoperfect provides exceptionally high-quality results from transparencies and reflective prints with the click of the scan button. Using a pre-calibrated "Module" Binuscan assesses the image and performs a color correction and enhancement of the image. This will produce a vastly improved result in terms of sharpness and detail compared to a corrected scan via a color correction package. The modules can be modified to meet the requirements of your printing device.

Advantages: Cheap Disadvantages: parrallel port connection
...I recently purchase a Umax Astra 1220P parrallel port scanner for only £40! While the image quality isn't brilliant when using the software supplied, when using a graphics package such as Paint Shop Pro the quality can rival scanners that cost 5 times the price! The scanner is very simple to install, just make sure you take the scanning head lock off first. The front of the scanner just has one green LED to indicate power. The lamp in the scanner's head is controlled by a utiliy that is installed with the drivers. At the price the scanner is superb for home users who want to add a scanner to their set-up...

Advantages: Price, Features, Availability Disadvantages: unnessesary buttons near screen for internet/e-mail

There was a toss up with the DEL laptop and the Umax. The Umax had a larger hard drive but I was still drawn to the DEl. Then I went to their site and had a look at ordering. £50 for delivery (approx) I was NOT impressed. This raised the stakes a lot.
I orderd the Umax from Dabs Direct (www.dabs.co.uk). Never had any problems with Dabs, They even price matched with Jungle (a bit of a process, but they did do it). And no charge for delivery.
Notebook arrived two working days later all OK.
And to beat it all i got 2% of because i purchased it with my Egg Card.
Machine works fine. Only problem was with using the OpenGL screen savers, caused it to lock up when it when the screen shutdown.

Advantages: Cheap, decent build quality, good picture quality Disadvantages: Slow, and old.
...big in comparison with most new ones, and although it doesn't look to bad, it does look very drab compared to the new ones, especially those that come with the currently fashinable 'iMac' colouring. It is a flatbed scanner, so you simply need to place your document on the glass panel under the cover, which need not be closed while scanning, so it can easily accomodate anything from a business card to an encyclopedia. Be careful with the weight you place on the panel though! Once, I pressed down a little to hard to try and flatten the spine of a book out, and ended up dislogging the scanning head, though Umax (or rather Novatech where I bought it from) replaced/repaired it free of charge. Very nice of them.
It's not fast, but then most scanners aren't. At, it can be very prone to making some very strange and worrying sounds as the scanning...

You might ask why I am writing a review on a game/add on that is now over 4 years old, a virtual century in computer game production, especially when World of Warcraft has almost taken over the world in this genre.
Well, firstly, because I am still... more
