Ultimate Ears Boom 2 Speaker

Ultimate Ears Boom 2 Speaker

The UE Boom 2 is the latest Bluetooth speaker by Ultimate Ears' 2013 UE Boom. Its uniqueness certainly is for the super loud maximum volume it can reach causing a hard water splash.
I can say with confidence that its battery life is the longest when compared to any other speaker of its league.

The second version of the Boom box has those flaws from the original Boom fixed, and the hardware and software were much improved.

The needed improvements placed The UE Boom 2 Bluetooth speaker on the list of Best Speakers of 2015.

Similar in design to its first/ original version. The UE Boom 2 is:
67 x 180 mm, 548g tube
It features:
360 speaker grille that’s divided by a rubber strip running up its side and along the top and bottom. In this rubber band, is were speaker’s physical volume, and power controls locate.

The speaker is available in many bright, funky colours. Some buyers may find these vibrant colours as a put-off. I, however, with the blue, green and yellow model I am reviewing a super cool and fresh change to the dull monotone Bluetooth units at present on the market.

Built to IPX7-certification standards, which translated means that the UE Boom 2 can survive submersions in puddles, lakes, ponds, bathtubs and toilet pans to a maximum of 1m deep and for thirty minutes maximum time.

I’m not the bubble bath type, so to satisfy my curiosity I went ahead and after filling the kitchen sink with water kept it in the water for fifteen minutes. You can imagine how relieved I was in being able to confirm that the UE Boom 2 indeed survives submersions in water.

The UE Boom 2 also offers a better sound quality of the “360 degrees” audio already on the original Boom.

The first UE Boom had a sound quality issue. While the speaker could reach the insane volume, this dominant feature was a double-edged sword. The 2013 UE Boom once it past 75% volume level would result in the speaker’s two 1.5 in drivers and twin 2in passive radiators struggling. With maximum volume set, the speaker sound would begin to distort.

With the second version, which came out in 2015, the company tried to rectify the audio fault by loading the UE Boom 2 with larger, active drivers of 1.75in and passive radiators of 3in.

By Bluetooth speaker standards, the UE Boom 2 sound is impressive. Bass levels are robust and have a suitable punch, however, at times you can hear the sounds still drown out the mid-range. This was an issue when listening to bass-heavy tracks by The Doors.

You can call me a genius or lucky boy because I managed to fix the problem using The UE Boom app.
The App is available on both iOS or Android; it offers a few different services, giving volume control of the speaker and skip tracks with the most basic level.

The App also provides full audio settings control, so manually reducing its bass, for instance, or boosting its treble. Such settings allow me to tailor the Boom 2’s sound to best work with the particular track.

According to Ultimate Ears, the app also adds new features to the speaker, via software updates over-the-air.

After fiddling a bit with settings, I achieved a decent audio from the speaker.

Equally impressive with other good speakers I owned and still own when playing loud music The UE Boom 2 is easily loud enough to cover my two bedroom flat. Having said that, some volume issues remain to be improved even though they aren’t severe.

Up to the 75% sound quality, the speaker is not affected by any distortion. At 90%, you have distortion and noise disturbing. Most home users will never turn it up to that.

The UE Boom 2 power comes from a non-removable Lithium-Ion battery, which the producer quotes as having a 15-hour life.

15-hour life is optimistic. The UE Boom 2 could last up to 15 hours only if playing music at a moderate volume. At louder volumes, the UE Boom 2 has been going on between eight and eleven hours.

It is evident that this is still impressive, and translated in real terms the UE Boom 2 will easily play for a full day in the park, while if only played in the evening, you will only need to charge it once a week.

The UE Boom 2 is overall a great Bluetooth speaker.

It offers:
  • great audio quality, beating most speakers competitors
  • numerous advanced functions via the iOS and Android applications.

However, with £170 starting price, The UE Boom 2 comes with a similar price tag of the stellar Bose SoundLink Mini II.
Bare in mind that while the Bose SoundLink Mini II isn't IP-certified, it offers superior sound quality and it may be a better choice for those who will not use their speaker outside, or in the bath/shower.

I had it since 31st of January 2017. so a few months. I also own other speakers including Bose SoundLink Mini II. Because of my job I get, destroy and spend most of my money on speakers, headphones and microphones. Not too sure what you mean with testimonial.?? A thought personal review and testimonial could go together. ??/
