Using the product, I have many qualms about it: the driver application software which comes with it is sub-standard, in fact the driver is terrible, and you must install a commercial program to get any decent response from the thing. Also, althought the scanner is light, is is quite bulky in comparison to today's modern scanners. Coupled with this massive lack of speed is the fact that it is quite a noisy scanner. The colour matching is also not always very accurate. It also takes ages to warm up (it claims to take 30 seconds, but this is not actually true), and takes ages to scan anything at any kind of decent resolution (above 200). Coupled with this massive lack of speed is the fact that it is quite a noisy scanner. The colour matching is also not always very accurate. I am not particularly impressed with this purchase, but if all you are looking for is a cheap scanner, and you are not concerned about the speed or noise, and do not mind if the resulting scan is not absolutely perfect, then this is a good buy. For most home and small business uses, the advantages (i.e. the price) of this scanner far outweigh the disadvantages.

I bought this scanner for about £90 December 2000. The scanner is quite a big machine in comparison to others like Canon but at least it's sturdy and well built. The quality of the scans are very good although the scanner is very slow. The parallel interface is partly the problem but the scanner head moves slowly anyway. Fortunately, speed isn't much of an issue here but because of the interface you can't do anything else with the computer while ... ...very easy to use and has some good features. There is an online scanner manual as well as the paper manual and an online driver manual. The driver is an industry standard TWAIN driver so it can be used in all supported applications.
The scanner features a 1200 x 1200 PPI (optical resolution) scan head which offers single pass 36 bit colour scans and 12 bit grey. The maximum interpolated resolution is 9600 PPI. The scanning area is 8.50 x 11.70 inches.

Umax are generally the cheapest scanners you can get. When buying a scanner, the main features to look for and pay for is: a) Resolution This is not too much of a problem because if the scanner can do over 600 dpi, then its more than enough for any user, barr the Multimillion pound publisher..! b) Price Don't go over board. Buy the scanner tha meets your needs not your budget.. scanners are very cheap, don't boterh spending more than about £100. ... ...USB and SCSI being faster, but expect to pay a little more for those. If you use the scanner regularly than a scsi/usb would be a good investment, or else stick to a cheap parallel port version. d)Features Don't be foole by the many features. A scanner can all do similar things so don't worry too much about it. Why a UMAX? Its cheap, and effciant and reliable and the quality is comparable to those expensive ones..! The UMAX Astra 1220P is a parallel port scanner. The scanning quality is good for theprice that you pay but the speed is a little slow. If you only have to scan a few documents at low resolution then this is the scanner for you but if you want to use the scanner on a regular basis you need to invest more money. The software supplied is good although if you are altering photos Adobe Photoshop is better. The scanner also has a pass-through but I recommend ...

I recently purchase a Umax Astra 1220P parrallel port scanner for only £40! While the image quality isn't brilliant when using the software supplied, when using a graphics package such as Paint Shop Pro the quality can rival scanners that cost 5 times the price! The scanner is very simple to install, just make sure you take the scanning head lock off first. The front of the scanner just has one green LED to indicate power. The lamp in the scanner's ...

Since more than 90 percent of scanners at Totemham Court Road's computers shops were made in Taiwan. As an overseas student from that place, I am quite familiar with them. I knew most of the manufactories and their assembly lines. ( Some of them, labeled with different brands, even came form the same assembly line.)
I bought it because it's valuable for money, fast and light weighted.
The soft ware programme is also the reason that I chose it. ...
