It's gone 11pm, we've got no money for takeout and we're starving after a marathon guitar hero III session (it's bloody ridiculous how addictive that thing is).
After searching through the measly offerings in the cupboard (remember I'm still on the dole after being shafted by the evil ex-boss) I'm drawn to the corner in which lurks 3 packs of the aforementioned rice (I got them in Th'Asda on 3 for 2 offer but can't remember how many English pennies they cost). The lurid orange plastic deceptively makes me grab for them, and I declare in a triumphant voice that we shall dine like royalty. Oh, how wrong was I.
After careful consideration, I decide that one pack is plenty (thank god) for the two of us as it's only for a midnight snack and not a hearty meal (does say serves 1-2 people). I carefully follow the instructions of:
1. squeeze the pouch to separate the rice 2. tear a 2 cm opening for vent 3. heat on full power (700W) for 2 minutes.
There are instructions for creating in a pan but it kind of defeats the object of "Uncle Ben's Express Microwavable Egg Fried Rice", then again it might have made it taste half decent.
So, cooking in the loosest sense of the word is complete, the washing up's done (the plastic container is safely in the bin) and we tuck in. I have never tasted egg fried rice like it. The rice was cloying and tasted odd, plastic almost. The egg they used must have come from a ruddy hummingbird because there was hardly any - most disappointing. Egg fried rice should be a greasy affair with egg and peas clearly visible, and it should taste nice. No such luck. The flavour must have been thrown out when ol uncle B got rid of the artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.
I'm not going to list the ingredients or tell you the nutritional values because you're neither going to make it, and nor will you really care. The only ingredient I tasted was rice, and it wasn't worth the 216 calories that were ingested. I believe there are different flavours - I've got a veg one and a chicken version sitting exactly where I left them and they'll probably sit there until I get very desperate indeed - there's a long use by date on them so that's lucky isn't it?
If you're intrigued as to how yummy this product truly isn't, then you can purchase them all over the place or check out the website at www.unclebens.co.uk to view the packet in all its glory or alternatively, you could ring the Consumer Care Dept on 08009521234 and maybe they could describe the package and taste for you.
Advantages: Quick and easy to cook. Good choice of flavours. Disadvantages: A tad pricey.
...my staple foods has become Uncle Bens Express Rice.
The range itself is rather large with many different flavours to choose from. These include mushroom, Chinese, golden vegetable and Thai style, however my personal favourite has to be the vegetable pilau flavour and this is the one which my review will concentrate on.
The product itself is available from all good supermarkets and convenience stores and is normally located in the aisle with the ... ...but is frequently available on special 2 for 1 offers. It is available in pouches of 250g only.
It is packaged in a bright orange plastic pouches so it is very hard to miss. The front of the pouch has the name of the product as well as one of those very tempting pictures of the cooked product in a bowl. Just a question here, how come the product never looks as good as in those pictures? Answers on a postcard please. (or in the comments!!) OK enough ...

Advantages: Quick and doesn't taste too bad. Disadvantages: not great.
...give these a try.
Uncle Bens Express Rice comes in bright orange plastic pouches With a picture of a bowl of rice on the front and cooking instructions on the back as well as the nutritional info and a little recipe suggestion. There is just enough for one person in each pouch. There are many different flavours to choose from. I chose one egg fried rice and one Tomato and basil. It is the latter that I am doing this review on to day.
There are ... ...microwave. Just tear a small slit in the pouch and pop in the microwave for two minutes and stand for one minute, then open pouch and serve. The second is cooking in a pan, put 2 tablespoons of boiling water in a pan with the rice and simmer for three minutes with the lid on and serve. I don’t like microwave food but I thought in this case I would try it.
On opening the pouch I didn’t think there was much of any kind of aroma just a very faint herby ...

Advantages: Super quick to make, fairly filling Disadvantages: Utterly tasteless, soggy AND hard
Uncle Ben's Express Microwaveable Rice:
(I felt compelled to write this review after seeing glowing recommendations of this product - I can't quite believe they've been eating the same rice....)
This is the simplest quickest "meal" you'll ever "make". Simply tear a small (2cm) gash in the top of the pack and nuke it on full power for 2 minutes.
As someone who wants her dinner the minute she decides she's hungry, I was super excited to find this ... ...marks.
However, even an ever impatient dust-bin such as me has other criteria for her food. I want it to be filling, and I want it to taste good! Well yes, it's fairly filling. But I'd be shocked if it wasn't, it's RICE - that staple foodstuff of half the world. Whole empires have been built on rice. Of course it's going to keep hunger at bay.
So what does it taste of?
Well, there's quite a range of flavours : Mushroom, Chinese-style, Mexican, ...

Advantages: quick 'n' easy Disadvantages: pretty darn pricey
...the supermarket and buy some Uncle Ben's Microwaveable Rice. Then go home, put the plastic sachet in the microwave, cook for 1 minute, and it's all ready. That's right, you heard correctly: One minute. Ha - now look at all the fools who spent an hour of their day sweating over a hot pan to produce a measly bowlful of rice. Look at them as though they are freaks in a circus ring. You may also point and laugh, but I wouldn't touch them. They're all ... ...and you certainly don't get Uncle Ben's Microwaveable Rice for nothing. No, you have to reimburse the purveyor of this fine product something in the region of 89 pence. That may not seem like much, but when you compare it to a portion of bog standard rice, which probably comes out at about 10 pence, it's a little extortionate. Still, do the maths: would you cook a bowl of rice for someone from scratch if they offered you 79 pence? No, of course you ...

The Packaging
It comes in a bright orange coloured pouch with a picture of a bowl full of rice on the front so it is fairly easy to spot on the shelf. The reverse of the package has information relating to the cooking instructions and there is also a recipe suggestion.

Conclusion
I would definitely recommend Uncle Ben's Express Rice not only for its convenience but also for its taste and nutritional value.

I always find it difficult to cook rice, I usually end up with a soggy mess or slightly too crunchy helpings. That's why I'm always looking to 'cheat' my way through. I find boil in the bag rice easier to cook than just packet rice, but UncleBen Express well and truly comes to my rescue!
Cooking
Its really simple to cook, as anything microwaveable generally is. The rice is readt steamed and seasoned so just needs warming up. You simply cut the top corner off the packet and place in the microwave. Depending on the strength of your mivrowave, you then microwave on high for 2-3 minutes. Then it's done, simple as that! It's definitely quick and easy.

The rice tastes good. There's no danger of it tasting watery or tasteless as good old UncleBen has done the seasoning for you. The vegetables are good too ...

Advantages: quick and easy to use, tasty and veratile Disadvantages: cost more than othe brans of rice
I try to give my family a balanced diet and so rice is a tasty alternative to potatoes or pasta. I used to boil rice and end up with either too much or too little until I discovered UncleBens Golden Vegetable Rice. Now I just tear the corners of the rice packets and pop it into the microwave for two minutes. I know that a packet does a person and so I have no waste. Ok I know it is more expensive but I have no waste, I do not have the pan to wash and it never comes out of the microwave sticky and starchy as my rice used to. The vegetables are tasty and it goes well with chicken or even sausages. My son likes it on its own as a tasty snack and it is simple for him to prepare. I now always keep a couple of packets in the cupboard. ...
