Uncle Bens's Medium Chilli Con Carne
I love spicy food and will often not only make my own recipes but will also buy-manufactured sauces when I am short of time. One of the sauces I have brought is Uncle Ben’s Medium Chilli Con Carne sauce.
** Packaging**
The sauce is contained in a clear glass jar with an orange lid and colourful paper labelling. The clear glass jar enables you to see the sauce before you buy and I have found that the kidney beans, tomatoes and onions can be clearly seen. I have also found that I have been able to judge the consistency of the sauce by a little shake of the bottle.
The label has the Uncle Ben’s logo in navy blue type on orange background. I found that this style of packaging helps the sauce to be easily identified.
The rear of the label shows Guideline Daily Amounts information, Nutritional values, recipe suggestions, tips from Uncle Ben, list of ingredients and Quality assurance. The Jar I brought also indicates a 2-year shelf life which seems pretty good.
** The sauce**
The label describes the sauce as a ‘rich blend of tomato, cumin, coriander, kidney and pinto beans with Jalapeno peppers’. This gives the sauce a warming rich red appearance.
From the amount of sauces I have brought I have found Uncle Ben’s Medium Chilli sauce thick and often leaves a little bit in the jar. A little swill around with water helps remove any leftover sauce from the jar.
The sauce is easy to cook, for chilli just add to browned beef and cook for 4-5 mins. I have found the smell and taste of the sauce is not particularly spicy or strong, however as a bit of a fiddler when I cook I tend to ‘taste test’ the sauce as I cook and add additional chilli/peppers if need be.
I enjoyed the taste and texture of the sauce, when it has come straight out of the jar and when I have adapted and found it does not leave a bitter aftertaste in the mouth.
Some people may find this product a little bland especially if you are used to making your own hot chilli. However, a little additional herbs and spices will help sort that out or buy the hot version.
**Adaptability of the sauce**
As with most sauces, you can add extra ingredients, such as tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, peppers, beans. I have found this quite handy especially if you have unexpected guests which you need to wizz up a snack or if your prefer a veggie meal.
The Uncle Bens websites do list various recipes, which this sauce can be used. I must admit the Chilli Beef with Nachos and Roasted Peppers with Chilli filling are among my favourite, but it is also nice if you mix it with mashed potatoes and use Nacho’s for dunking!

Advantages: Quick, Easy, Long Shelf life Disadvantages: Not Hot Enough
...medium Chilli sauce made by Uncle Ben's and it really is quick, easy and tasty.
It comes in a glass jar so very handy for the environmentally aware and has the usual orange sticker over the jar so that you recognise it on the shelves. Uncle Ben's are a popular well known company and available in most supermarkets and smaller convenience stores - usually found in the aisle that contains the cook in sauces and pasta sauces. The jar only comes in one ... ...spice it up yourself.
Uncle Ben's claims to contain no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives and states the name of the manufacturer (Masterfoods) and the address in which you can contact them. This comes in a 500gram jar with the nutritional values clearly laid out and at 58 cals per 100 gramms with less than 1gramm of fat this is a good low fat choice.
I bought my jar last week and the use by date on this actual jar is 01/04/2005 - so ...

Advantages: Saves time, was on offer, pleasant enough taste Disadvantages: Where was the chilli?
...their own range and in Uncle Ben’s. Now there’s a name to trust, isn’t it? Given that it claimed to be “medium” I thought it couldn’t be totally bland, can it?
~~~ PACKAGING ~~~
This sauce comes in a see through standard glass jar containing 500g of sauce. It’s an air-pressured lid with a twist off top that I had no trouble unscrewing. The corporate orange of Uncle Ben’s is in evidence on both the lid and the labelling round the jar. At the top ... ...a green flash stating “medium chilli” above a mouth watering picture of the “medium spiced mexican sauce with red kidney beans”.
The reverse of the label contains the usual customer satisfaction type information and the nutritional gubbins per 100g is also highlighted.
The label also contains suggested use of the chilli sauce along with an alternative idea to use as a filling for Mexican tortillas.
Advantages: Ready made sauce Disadvantages: Kidney beans need longer cooking time.
...result wasn’t worth it. Uncle Ben let me down big time and so I won’t be buying any more of these jars. It was one of those days when time has run out and everyone is tired and hungry. Speedy solution needed - something quick and filling and maybe we’d all feel better. A quick glance in the cupboards and I noticed a jar of Uncle Bens medium chilli sauce lurking at the back. Ideal I thought couldn’t be simpler and a meal ready ... ...middle of the jar. Uncle Ben’s smiling face looks at you from the jar with the caption ‘perfect every time’ written underneath. Perfect? I don’t think so. The colourful picture of a steaming bowl of chilli looks appetising enough on the front of the jar and the main ingredients are tomatoes, 11% red kidney beans, sweetcorn, red and green peppers and chilli paste. I added more water to my portion as I don’t like ‘hot’ ...
Advantages: fresh, fragrant, good quantity, good price Disadvantages: none
...mexican chili. I generally find Uncle Ben's sauces far superior to other ready made cooking sauces. They just seem fresher, tastier and closer to homemade than you would expect. First impressions on this sauce is the jar. It's a good quantity with a pleasant look. When you open the jar you get a lovely smell of a blend of spices along with the tomato sauce. There's a good amount of fresh tomato sauce in there so none of that horribly overprocessed ... ...smell and taste them and they add a bit of tingling but they don't burn your mouth and throat. They're mild. Cooking with the sauce is a breeze. It covers everything perfectly without congealing and is the perfect consistency for any dish. I have found from experience that the amount of beans in the sauce varies. Sometimes there are too many in there and they don't go mushy but I like the added texture. Again, the beans feel fresh, not dehydrated ...
