Understanding Object Oriented Programming with JAVA by Timothy Budd is a very approachable book and quite easy to read.
It might help if you have a basic understanding of computers, but other than that you can dive straight into this book and it will give a good, consistent, gentle but informative introduction to the world of JAVA programming.
I was supplied this bok as part of the Open University's M301 course - Software Systems and Engineering - a course which I also mightily recommend.
This book gives lots of example programs and develops their themes gradually so that you build your new knowledge on top of the knowledge you have gained in the previous chapter.
