Unfinished Tales is an excellent addition to the family of published Tolkien books, and that Christopher Tolkien did quite a good job in the editing of this particular volume. C. Tolkien basically left all the “stories” in Unfinished Tales as J.R.R. Tolkien had written them. As the name Unfinished Tales suggests, these were not completely finished at the time Tolkien passed away. That means that some of them don’t ...

Advantages: Another glimmering facet of the master! Disadvantages: won't appeal to non Tolkien fans
...Earth. This is where Unfinished Tales comes in. Split into four parts, with the first and second age given more detail and the third age as well, this also covers many area's that were undeveloped in his previous works, elements on the Palantir and the Istari. This for me is so absorbing and would come in useful for anyone who is interested in the huge mythologies of Middle Earth.
The first age is a very undeveloped section if you haven't read the ... ...the light of day. Unfinished tales being one of them, it has notes following every section of the book explaining things in even more detail.
So why should you read unfinished tales ? If the wonderful story's and the involving history are not reason enough then I guess this is not your type of read. As ever the descriptive prose of Tolkien is sensational in keeping the reader merrily skipping along with the tumults of the protagonists. Often wondrous ...

This is a new hardback edition of JRR Tolkien's legacy of short stories, which inhabit the realm of "The Lord of the Rings". "Unfinished Tales" is a collection of narratives ranging in time from the Elder Days of Middle-earth to the end of the War of the Ring, and provides those who have read "The Lord of the Rings" with a whole collection of background and new stories from the twentieth century's most acclaimed popular author. The book concentrates on the realm of Middle-earth and comprises such elements as Gandalf's lively account of how it was that he came to send the Dwarves to the celebrated party at Bag-End, the emergence of the sea-god Ulmo before the eyes of Tuor on the coast of Beleriand, and an exact description of the military organization of the Riders of Rohan. "Unfinished Tales" also contains the only story about the long ages of Numenor before its downfall, and all that is known about such matters as the Five Wizards, the Palantiri and the legend of Amroth. The tales were collated and edited by JRR Tolkien's son and literary heir, Christopher Tolkien, who provides a short commentary on each story, helping the reader to fill in the gaps and put each story into the context of the rest of his father's writings.
