We have recently given our tired old looking bathroom a bit of a make over. As well as a new shower, new tiles and new taps, we decided to remove the mouldy old sealant around the sink and bath and replace it with new. For this purpose we chose Unibond's high performance shower, bath and kitchen sealant.
The main reason we used Unibond is due to the fact that it is a well-known and trusted brand and is also widely available. We purchased ours at B&Q for £3.99 for a 90ml (90g) tube. The other big advantage is that as we do not have a traditional silicone gun, this product can be purchased
in an aerosol can, as well as the traditional tube to go inside your gun. The product is available in various sizes including 275ml and 310ml for bigger jobs. We bought the white finish as it fitted best into our bathroom, however translucent and ivory finishes are also available.
The packaging is very much standard issue for any unibond product. It has an attractive looking red cap, with a picture of a shower and the product name on the front. The reverse of the can has all the useful directions for use as well as some handy DIY tips for those who need them (like me!!!)
The use of this product is very straightforward. Simply pressing down the applicator sideways onto the surface you are sealing dispenses silicone. This surface should be completely dry before starting. The top of the applicator should also first be cut to the desired bead width, which can range from 6mm to 12mm. The size of bead also affects curing and drying time so this should also be taken into account. Once on, the silicone can be manipulated in the first 5 minutes or so by using a spatula or back of a pencil, and excess can be removed by using white spirit. Once the job is completed you need to leave the silicone cure for around 24 hours before exposing it to any water.
There are many positive things to this product and I will list out a selection now: -
Firstly, the product contains a superior mould resistance additive, which is especially useful when using in a humid environment such as the bathroom. This should prevent the silicone turning black and horrible like the stuff we had on when we moved here!!!
Secondly the silicone is designed to be flexible with movement, meaning that you shouldn't have gaps appearing in your seal over time. One tip that is provided on the reverse of the can is to fill your bath with water when sealing around it to make the gap as large as it is going to get.
Thirdly the product will stay fresh inside the can for a period up to 3 months which means that in the unlikely event of gaps appearing you can simply whip the can back out of the shed and re-do the area without having to fork out another few quid for the privilege.
Finally the product comes with a 35-year guarantee.
There are just a few negative things to report: -
Firstly the smell, as one of the curing agents in silicone is acetic acid, the product smells like vinegar whilst it is curing. The advice is to use in a well-ventilated area with the windows open, but we all know that within minutes of starting the job, the whole house is affected with a smell like a sarsons lorry has crashed next to the house!!! This does only last for 24 hours or so as the product is curing, however it is distinctly unpleasant.
Secondly and I am nit picking slightly here, the applicator is not the easiest to use and it may take a couple of seconds to master the turn it sideways and press method. As I say this is a minor point and may just as likely be down to my distinct lack of any DIY skill!!!
Thirdly, it cannot be used in permanent wet areas, such as around the base of a shower unit, although this is more a case of product suitability rather than a disadvantage
To sum up, I would recommend this as a very useful and good quality product for all bathroom and kitchen sealant jobs. It is slightly more expensive than some of the other sealants on the market, but I am a firm believer of you get what you pay for, and Unibond do not disappoint with this high performance sealant.
