I've been at the university college northampton for 2 years studying a nursing degree. I like most other students here chose it for one reason only-its local. It differs from other universities in that the majority of students are not in their teens or early 20s most of us are people who have taken time out from education and for one reason or another have decided that this is the time to return. Hence the reason we have chose a local uni-if you have a lot of financial responsibilities you cannot go away to study and for that reason ucn flourishes being the only university in the area. However I find it lacking in most areas. It was built as a college and because of a lack of space and i assume money most of the facilities cater for only a college.
There is not enough parking, canteen space, shopping facilities or bars so those living on campus miss out.
The i.t facilities in the college are also lacking. There is an i.t centre with cdrom machines and also computers with access to the internet however at busy times during the day for instance at lunchtime you are unlikely to find a free computer-however I am told these facilities are very helpful for the students living on campus as they are open late at night and not busy during the evenings.
The library itself is of a much better standard. It is fairly large in size and has a wide range of books. It also has cdroms and internet access although you should book ahead for the internet which is booked in 1 hour blocks. The librarians are very helpful and will give you extra help if you need it for referencing techniques or internet searching etc. The only complaint with the library is the journal section. It does not have many nursing or medical journals and for these courses you would have to go to the local hospital libraries.
The classrooms on a whole are adequate with a number of the larger lecture theatres recently been renovated. However there has been a problem with double booking of rooms since i have attended the college and class losing out to the room will often have to use the old mobiles instead which are cold and uncomfortable.
My particular course is badly ran and if I could, I would go elsewhere to study it. Therefore if you are in the position and want to experience university life then go elsewhere but if you want a local college then I'm sure UCN will do the job.
