...much more central than the University of Manchester one, with Piccadilly Station, Chorlton St Bus Station, and the city centre all within easy reach. The Trafford Centre is but a short bus ride away providing an annoying amount of temptation to broke students who should be studying anyway and not shopping. There are a number of halls of residence on campus (probably the only time in my life I’ll be able to afford an M1 residence.....) and others ... ...most unis, all 1st years who accept a place by a set date are guaranteed uni owned accommodation. There’s also a nice wide range to suit all pockets, from nice en suite catered to grotty little places, with lots in between. I was (and will be again) in Wright Rob which is self catered with shared bathrooms, but daily cleaners mean you have no problems in these areas.
Where to start? Student life? Courses? Bars? This is a tricky op to write as the topic is such a broad one. What I’ve done is simply to touch briefly on a few areas that should give an overview of UMIST as a whole.
Reasons °°°°°°°°°°
What were my reasons for choosing UMIST back in 6th form? A combination of factors to be truthful including:
I was looking for a computing based course that did not demand A Level maths. I also have an unhealthy interest in language in general, and wanted a course that allowed me to take a work placement in a foreign country for a year in the middle. UMIST offered all of these and it was the only UK uni that did, so that was important.
When I applied I was in my 6th year at an all girls school, so in all honesty the fact that 80% of students were male was hardly off putting (until I met them that is - then I realised why so few girls study there....)
On an open day I heard that the average starting salary from my degree was over 30k. Bingo! I thought
My mother had promised (promised? More like threatened) that if I went too far from home she would not be ferrying me back and forth all the time, or indeed every term. I don’t have a car, and travelling on a train with a computer, stereo, clothes, oh and some books probably since students seem to need these occasionally, was not what I wanted. Manchester is only about 80 mins from where we live so this helped.
Background °°°°°°°°°°°°°
UMIST is in the top 10 British unis and had the best careers service in the county. According to last year’s Sunday Times, “Graduates from UMIST earn the highest salaries in Britain.... six months after graduation, the top earner was paid £63,000 ". In a world in which students are graduating up to their eyeballs in debt, facts like this can make you feel better.
UMIST is one of the smaller universities in the country because it only offers specialized courses – anything ending in “engineering” goes, but humanities are a big no no. This means there are fewer students around and you soon get to recognize faces. Class sizes can also be small – in CL last year there were only 3 of us – although some popular courses like Computation have a few hundred participants. The uni offers some very unusual courses – like paper science, computational linguistics (my course) and textiles. Admittedly the latter is not that unusual, but at such as technical establishment it’s not exactly what you would expect. Many courses have an industrial year option, and lots can be taken with a foreign language meaning your placement year can be abroad too.
Location and Accommodation °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° The campus is much more central than the University of Manchester one, with Piccadilly Station, Chorlton St Bus Station, and the city centre all within easy reach. The Trafford Centre is but a short bus ride away providing an annoying amount of temptation to broke students who should be studying anyway and not shopping. There are a number of halls of residence on campus (probably the only time in my life I’ll be able to afford an M1 residence.....) and others are scattered throughout Rusholme, Fallowfield and Victoria Park. As with most unis, all 1st years who accept a place by a set date are guaranteed uni owned accommodation. There’s also a nice wide range to suit all pockets, from nice en suite catered to grotty little places, with lots in between. I was (and will be again) in Wright Rob which is self catered with shared bathrooms, but daily cleaners mean you have no problems in these areas.
Facilities °°°°°°°°°
Despite being a smallish uni, UMIST does well facilities wise. The library is well stocked with journals and books and they always seem to have what you need in so no waiting. Inside, there’s also a mini bookshop for when you have to have a set text. There are ample computers scattered around the place, and one cluster offers 24 hour access with your swipe card. All students get a set num of free prints each year, and if you use all yours up, make friends with a computation student since they have unlimited when printing from the department’s computers. For photocopying needs there are lots of machines, and even a copy shop for when you cannot do something yourself (or else cannot be bothered).
Union °°°°°°
There’s an active students association considering how few students there are compared to other establishments. USA as they are called have a shop (just the one!) and a bar and lounge (Harry’s and Paddy’s....) which provide pool tables and cheap drinks if nothing else. There’s a uni magazine – Grip - which has to be the worse thing ever published, but it’s free and so we read it (although it is not at all gripping as the name would suggest). One downside at first was that USA are not NUS members, but the president, another Zoe, and her staff assure us that our ID cards are accepted everywhere in the area. On a plus side, I’ve found that abroad they can be more accepted than NUS jobbies which is handy.
I could go on forever about this but I know from experience how annoying waffly long ops can be. If you have any particular questions, please leave me a note and I’ll do my best to answer them.

Review of University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST)
Advantages: great nightlife, good choice of subjects, chance of a year abroad, great reputation Disadvantages: sometimes courses are unorganised, tough competition to get in
I've just finished my third year of an International Management and French at UMIST and would recommend it to anyone. You get so much choice of modules that you can really tailor your degree to your interests. The third year is spent abroad, and everyone says it, but it really is the best year of your life. You meet so many people and gain a totally new outlook on life. Manchester itself is an amazing city - there's a huge student community and more ...

Advantages: top quality courses, mixture of people, great facilities for study and recreation Disadvantages: campus spread out, no nearby accommodation
...still look back to my university days with many great memories, although it was only a year ago that I finished being a student in the vibrant city that is Manchester. I was enrolled on the Management course (which I'm told now has a magnificent, ultra-sophisticated building in the heart of the city) and had no idea what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised over the 3 year course. Not only was the course thoroughly useful in terms of the teaching ... ...of practical work, lively seminars and debates; in fact, everything that a student could want from a course. The lecturers came from a range of backgrounds (one such was Terry Leary, Chief Executive of Tesco's) and had varied opinions, which helped the individual to come to their own conclusions.
UMIST has a great deal to offer in terms of recreational facilties, support for students and general atmosphere. Conditions for working are also top notch. ...

Advantages: in the city, plenty of places to eat, and shop Disadvantages: require high grades
...would expect from a good university the entrey grades r pretty high for some subjects.
the university has many computer clusters so finding a computer to do ur work on is absolutly no problem, and of course all the computers are connected to the net. if u want to connect ur PC to the net from the halls then u can rent an ISDN line for a year.
the Library is extreamly useful and has a huge range of books. umist students have the privalage to use ...

...this is a very good university to attend for leisure and pleasure as well as work! I did my computation degree at UMIST and it is one of the best rated courses (continously rates within the top 3 and it sometimes beats universities such as Kings College and Imerial - shocking huh!).
WHERE IS IT?
Located in the heart of manchester UMIST is a 30 second walk from the city centre! The main campus, theres only 2, is surrounded by motorways but don't ... ...The improvements to the university are visible year after year and the student union is effective as they actually listen to what you have to say. There is alot of research that goes on at UMIST and hence it has alot of good relations with ivarious industires. I'd say the best courses that UMIST has are all its Computational courses, its Optometry course nad the management courses.
The weather is one thing that leaves alot to be desired for though!!

Advantages: Good quality Disadvantages: Not well know
They very fact that this university is not featured in the list of univerisities on this site is a reflection on the attitude of people in general regarding this university.
There seems to be a poor recognition of this university, despite it is one of the oldest and arguablely the best university in the North West area.
The courses are mainly sciences and management. It comes joint top in management with the likes of the London School of Economics ...
