Advantages Modern facilities, quality of tutoring, social life
Disadvantages Lack of books, little community feel, no parking!
It's easy to look back at your University years as being some of the best days of your life. People also naturally hype the Uni that they attended because its the only thing they know.
UP THE UWE!
I attended UWE between 1994 to 1997 and had an excellent time - I studied Politics and Sociology. The quality of tutoring is generally excellent. And this was during the "bums on seats" era of Tory education policy. It has a very active student union - both politically and in arranging social events. It also ran an excellent student magazine known as Bacus. Bristol is a great student city - if you are into dance music then this city is the centre of the world. I spent many a happy night at Lakota. I could have got a first (instead of a crappy 2:2) if it wasn't for that place!
UNI OF WOE!
But UWE wasn't without its problems. I disagree with one of the opinions. Unless things have radically changed, the library at Frenchay is rubbish. The pressure on books around exam time was ridculous. Many of the seminar tutors were underpaid and over-stressed. The fact that UWE has many sites means that it lacks a strong community feel. Finally, it's almost impossible to park on site!
CONCLUSION:
Things may have completely changed since my day, but most surveys still say that UWE is one of the best of the old Polys.
