You may think this was on one of the kids Christmas lists last year but no it was on mine. I come from a big family were a lot of time was spent on games, sports etc. anything which everyone could get involved in.
For anyone trying to place this, on the TV advert it shows everyone laughing and larking while the electronic Uno machine randomly spits out anywhere between 1 and a bunch of uno cards just when you are about to win. If you have already played the Uno card game you'll find this very similar with a few added extras which up the fun factor.
We sat down with the boys on Boxing night to play and I left it to hubby to install the 3 size C batteries. We then placed the
Uno Extreme gizmo in the middle of the Dining table and began to play. After each player takes their turn you turn the unit towards the next person and it will spew forth cards as it pleases if play demands it.
Unfortunately after about three games we discovered that the screw for the battery compartment hadn't been put back in properly and everytime we turned it to the next person it was leaving a big scrape along my dining table. As you can imagine Mummy was not best pleased with the game or with Daddy for that matter. He sanded it down (the table that is) but its never been the same since.
The game itself was quick, easy to understand and fun for the adults and the 11 and 13 year old. Lots of banter and harassment took place but that's how we like our games.
- - Contents - -
The box contained the uno extreme machine, rules and a pack of cards which were similar to normal Uno cards being four colours, red, blue, green and yellow and numbered 1-9. There are also a number of special cards which are what causes the friction and fun to fly.
- - The Game - -
You deal out 7 uno cards each and place the remainder of the cards into the uno extreme machine. The idea of the game is to be the first to get rid of all your cards, you do this by discarding a card on top of a pile by matching it in number or colour or using a special card.
The special cards are what makes the game fun, cards like:-
Reverse - reverses play
Skip - Next person misses a turn
Wild - Play any card
Hit 2 -This makes the next player hit the launch button, unless they too have a hit 2 card then the poor next person gets to hit it 4 times, or plays his own hit 2 card and passed it on again.
Trade hands - If you have 12 cards and someone else has only one then you can choose to trade hands with them (This is extremely annoying for the person with one card who was going to win on their next turn - expletives may be uttered)
Discard all - Play a discard card and all the others in your hand which match that colour. Great way to get rid of a lot of cards at once.
Wild all hit - everyone except the player who has played this card has to press the launch button once. There is nothing more annoying than being down to your last card or two, pressing the button and getting 8 or 9 cards.
Wild all fire - everybody takes a turn hitting the machine until they get cards (another expletives warning)
Wild hit fire - The next person hits the machine until cards spew out.
When you are down to one card you need to shout uno before someone else to avoid being landed with extra cards. The argument over whether you said it before the other person in a game has been known to spill over into violence if the game is being played by adults who at some stage have partaken of alcoholic beverages, kids are slightly more grown up about it.
If you have ever played Jack change it or the original Uno card game you will recognise some of these plays.
- - The machine - -
Its plastic, colourful and a little cheap looking. We had a few problems with cards getting stuck at the beginning, which you could always tell by the noise it was making. However the longer we played it the less sticking there was. Everytime we get it out now it will still stick for the first couple of goes.
- - Storage - -
At the end of the game the cards all fit into the Uno Extreme machine (with a bit of a push), so hopefully once you have put the machine away all the cards will remain intact. This is an excellent idea as we end up throwing loads of almost brand new games out because some vital component has gone walkabout.
- - Playability - -
Each game probably lasts about 15 minutes but can go on for longer depending on how the cards fall.
Ideal for wet weekends and it has Caravan-ability (can I say that or is it trademarked by Davydoug?)
- - Price - -
Its been around a couple of years now I would expect you to be able to pick it up on offer before Christmas for around £10.00
- - Who's it for - -
I would recommend this for children and adults especially if wanting something to play together. You can also play this by adding up leftover cards and using a point system but for families I think its easiest just to say first one finished wins.
Summary: The family that plays together - stays together
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Faster and more unpredictable than the original game, UNO Attack/Extreme version gives ... more
players a random number of cards from the electronic dispenser, that they have to get rid of - fast. Command cards give players different strategic advantages, while there are plenty of trip-ups to watch out for. This game is suitable for 2 to 10 players, and is recommended for children aged 7+.
Postage & Packaging:£3.95 Availability:Out of stock
Advantages: Available in all various formats across the world Disadvantages: Unfortunately UNO is a card game that cannot be played alone as a single player like many normal card games
