Urban outfitters is a chain of 'lifestyle' stores across the world. Currently concentrated in America but with a store in Kensington, London, they offer anything from a tiger skin beanbag to a nodding dog.
The store is very impressive to look at from the inside. In London, you're used to space being a premium product with every square inch is treated as a selling opportunity. That's something Urban Outfitters haven't subscribed to - the store is massive with exposed structures and loads of space. There is a definite 'vibe' to this place with a DJ churning out music, staff wearing clothes they're comfortable in and a range of clothing you'll be hard pushed to find anywhere else.
Menswear is located in the basement. Clothes come from the school of Burro, Carhartt and Duffer of St George (amongst others) - lots of things your mother would imagine you've picked up from a second hand store (just don't let her see the *real* price!).
The range is decent and they tend to cater for most 'average' size men. If you are of a smaller or larger build, you may have difficulty in finding something that's right for you.
If you're a regular to Floral Street in Covent Garden and tire of going from shop to shop, Urban Outfitters bring most of these stores under one roof. This convenience may come at a slight premium where prices are concerned.
I have always found the staff helpful when either using the changing rooms or making a purchase. However, they do come across as quite unapproachable and will not pester you while you're in the store unless you actually ask for their help. The opportunity to shop without someone asking me if "everything is ok, sir" is something I really like though if you prefer the personal touch - you may find this difficult.
Another advantage of having many different brands under one roof is the opportunity to 'steal' ideas on what goes together based on the displays. The obvious disadvantage is that you end up spending more than you allowed yourself.
The store accepts most major credit cards and has a fair returns policy. There are many till point in the store but queues can often build up - the best till to use would be the one on the Menswear floor, as this often seems to attract fewer people.
Advantages: new trends, great range, friendly atmosphere Disadvantages: some pricey items
I am definitely someone who loves to shop and am always looking for new places to buy my clothes. I don't like to buy from all of the typical high street shops like New Look because I like to have things no one else does. I remember a while back when looking in some fashion magazines them mentioning the shopUrbanOutfitters but I noticed it was only a London shop so it wasn't really something I was interested in.
I then had a look on their US website and loved the looks of their clothes. So many unusual but nice things so I had a look on the store locator. I was shocked to find that Glasgow had a shop, so I got in my car and went for a drive, it took 40 minutes to get there. I was walking up Buchanan Street then in light blue lighting were the words UrbanOutfitters. I will base this review on the Glasgow and Manchester branches ...
Advantages: Great finds all the time anytime Disadvantages: Can be a bit pricey
Shopping is like an extension of a lifestyle for most of us. For some people, it's what they do - they don't just go shopping if they need clothes, shopping is like a hobby, or a first love. For others, it's the search for an identity ( I'm not trying to be melodramatic ) but so much importance is placed on what a person wears that you classify them on first sight what sort of a person they are. So it really matters that what you wear reflects what person you are ( or you can try to be a certain type of person by dressing that way, but that's going round and round in circles, so nevermind that ). Having said all that, UrbanOutfitters has to be one of my favorite shops.
As ImogenW says in her opinion on this shop, UrbanOutfitters used to be a purely American - more exactly Manhatten - thing. Don't think Sex and the City New York ...
Advantages: Funky stuff Disadvantages: Available in London
... noooo, there's now a LONDON branch! Everyone knows that the entire point of UrbanOutfitters was that you could go there while in NY or other cool american cities, purchase cool American stuff that would enable you to, when back in the UK, respond to envious enquiries that it's something you picked up in this really cool store in the states. I got so much mileage out of my urbanoutfitters stuff before they moved to London. Now they're here, selling their funky, eclectic yet well chosen selection of clothes, furnishings, records, lamps and general cool stuff on High Street Kensington and their cool factor has plummeted. They still have some pretty neat stuff mind, and are excellent for random offbeat stuff like cool cushions and always good for presents, but hey, for me it's just not the same. ...
